The usual culprits are bad ignition relay, bad module or coil(s). Ignition switch also possible.

DTC P1351 Ignition Coil Control Circuit High Voltage
The enhanced ignition system uses the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor in order to provide a timing input to the control module. Ignition control (IC) spark timing for each cylinder is based on this input. The control module provides the ignition timing signal to the ignition control module (ICM) to control the ignition coil. Each timing pulse detected by the ICM allows it to energize the ignition coil. A large secondary ignition voltage is induced in the secondary coil by the primary coil. This high voltage is switched to the correct spark plug by the distributor.
This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) will set if the VCM- (vehicle control module ) detects an unusually high voltage on the ignition timing signal circuit.
Diagnostic Aids
Intermittent test -- If the connections and the harness check OK, monitor a digital voltmeter connected between VCM terminal C3 pin 9 and C4 pin 18 while moving related connectors and wiring harness. If the failure is induced, the voltage reading will change. This may help to isolate the location of the malfunction.
An intermittent may be caused by any of the following conditions:

A poor connection

Rubbed through wire insulation

A broken wire inside the insulation
Thoroughly check any circuitry that is suspected of causing the intermittent complaint. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.

My 2003 pontiac aztek shuts off when its in idle

Monitor the 24X crank sensor and the CMP sensor signal present parameters on the scan tool. If both are not responding, test the sensor feed circuit. Both sensors use a separate feed circuit but are internally connected to power. Test all CKP sensor A and CMP sensor circuits for intermittents. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.

Monitor the 3X parameter on the scan tool. If the 3X is not responding, inspect the CKP sensor B and circuits for intermittents. Inspect the ignition control (IC) circuit, IC timing control circuit, low resolution engine speed signal circuit and the low reference circuit for intermittents. If these circuits become open, or shorted, they may not set a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) immediately, but are capable of causing driveability complaints. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.

Test the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system for proper operation. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System Description .

Inspect the Transaxle Range Switch input with the vehicle in drive and the gear selector in drive or overdrive


Ignition System

Inspect for proper ignition voltage output using the following steps:


1.
Attach the J 26792 Spark Tester to engine ground.


2.
Connect the spark plug end of the spark plug wire to the J 26792 . Leave the other end of the spark plug wire connected to the coil being tested.


3.
Connect the spark plug end of the companion spark plug wire to ground. The companion spark plug wire is the wire attached to the corresponding coil tower.


4.
Crank the engine while observing the J 26792 . A spark should be observed.


5.
Repeat the above steps for each coil.

If spark is not present at the coils, inspect for the following conditions:

Coils--Cracks, carbon tracking/arcing, or a resistance value outside the specified range

Coil Resistance
5000-8000 ohms (5K-8K ohms)

Spark plug wires--Signs of arcing, cross firing, cracks, carbon tracking, plug boot damage, pinched, improper routing, or a resistance value outside the specified range

Spark Plug Wire Resistance
9 686 ohms per meter (3,000 ohms per foot)
Important: : Spraying the secondary ignition wires with a light mist of water may help locate an intermittent problem. Ignition voltage will arc to ground when a secondary component is faulty.

Hard starting


This problem can be hard to track down , it could be caused by several thing's ! A bad check valve in the fuel pump letting fuel drain back into the tank , not keeping fuel line pressure up , a crankshaft position sensor can also cause this as well as an ignition control module !

Inspect the powertrain control module (PCM) grounds for being clean, tight, and in the proper locations. Refer to Engine Controls Schematics .

Sensor/System
?€¢
Test the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor for being shifted in value. Connect a scan tool. Compare the engine coolant temperature against the intake air temperature (IAT) on a cold engine. The ECT and IAT sensor values should be within ?± 3?°C (5?°F) of each other. If the ECT sensor is out of range with the IAT sensor, check the resistance of the ECT sensor. Refer to Temperature Versus Resistance for resistance specifications. Replace the ECT sensor if the resistance is not within the specification. If the sensor is within the specification, repair the ECT signal circuit for high resistance.

Inspect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor installation. A MAF sensor that is incorrectly installed may cause a hard start. Important: The embossed arrows on the MAF sensor indicate the direction of the intake air flow. The arrows must point toward the engine. Install the MAF in the proper direction. Refer to Mass Airflow Sensor/Intake Air Temperature Sensor Replacement .

Inspect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor for proper mounting and/or a bad connection. A long crank time occurs if the PCM does not receive a CMP signal.

Fuel System

Inspect the fuel pump relay operation. The fuel pump should turn ON for 2 seconds when you turn ON the ignition. Refer to Fuel Pump Electrical Circuit Diagnosis .

A faulty in-tank fuel pump check valve allows the fuel in the lines to drain back to the tank after the engine stops. Refer to Fuel System Diagnosis .

Inspect both injector fuses for being open. An open injector fuse causes four injectors and four ignition coils not to operate. Replace the fuse. Inspect the injector circuits and the ignition coil circuits for an intermittent short to ground.

Not getting spark


need more info (need to know what type of ignition system your vehicle has: (1) traditional ignition coil /distributor system, or (2) electronic ignition, but lack of spark problems are usually a faulty coil
on traditional vehicles, and on the newer electronic ignition cars, total lack of spark would be
a faulty ECM (electronic control module) - partial lack of spark (diagnosed with a HEI (high energy ignition) spark tester kit), would be caused by a faulty coil pack (in the waste spark system), where
there's 1 coil pack for every 2 spark plugs.
I bought my HEI igntion testere kit for $20, but Harbor Freight sells a similar unit for $10.

After timing belt check light is on. code p0303 and p0304 why?


the P0303 code is for cyclinder #3 possible causes: -defective spark plugs, ignition cables, ignition coil. or flywheel/pulse wheel. -blocked/leaking injector -uneven compression -leakage between the cooling system and cyclimder moisture,flashover in the ignition system on HT side intermittent open-circuit, intermittent short circuit to tje ground,intermittent short circuit to the voltage supply, contact resistance or loose connector in the ignition system low-tension side, in the injector circuit or fuel pump circuit -fuel stoppage -water in the sparl plug wells - contaminated fuel or incorrect fuel type -repeated cold starting where the engine coolant temperature (ECT) has not reached nomal operating temperature between start P0304 is for cyclinder #4. Spark...no spark...spark ... no spark why??


Because your problem is intermittent it is very difficult to diagnose. This is the classic take it to the shop and the problem goes away till you drive it home again. I would start with checking for loose connections, you would need an electrical diagram to see how the ignition is actuated. Is there a crankshaft or flywheel sensor? Is the cap and rotor good. A common Ford problem is the ignition module it wouldn't hurt to change it (around $30) With intermittent problem sometimes you just start changing the most obvious/cheap parts and work your way up the food chain. According to the obd code i am getting a misfire in the number one cyln and it kind of sputters what is causing it


1. Bad or fouled Spark Plug at #1 Cylinder.
2. Bad or misfiring Wire going from the #1 on the Distributor/Electronic Ignition Coil to the #1 Cylinder.
3. Misfiring at the #1 on the Distributor/Electronic Iginition Coil.

a. Unplug the #1 Wire at the #1 on the Distributor/Electronic Ignition Coil.
b. Using an Auto electrical testing: Probe, wire and ground clip electrical, stick the Probe into the opening at the #1 Distributor/Electronic Ignition Coil. Use the grounding clip - clipped to a portion on the engine.
c. Start the Vehicle and check for rhythmic spark.
d. If there is NOT rhythmic spark, the Distributor/Electronic Ignition Coil needs to be replaced.
e. Turn off the engine.
f. If there is rhythmic spark: Reconnect the #1 Wire at #1 on the Distrubutor/Electronic Igntion Coil.
g. Disconnect the #1 Wire from the #1 Spark Plug.
h. Again using an Auto electrical testing: Probe, wire and ground clip. Insert the Probe into the end of the #1 Wire and clip the ground clip onto the engine.
i. Start the engine again.
j. Again Check for rhythmic spark.
k. If there is NOT rhythmic spark the #1 Wire needs to be replaced. (Replace all Wires as a Set).
l. If there is rhythmic spark then the #1 Wire is fine.
m. Turn off the engine,
n. Remove and Inspect the #1 Spark Plug. Clean if necessary and Regap.
o. Reinstall the Spark Plug and reconnect the #1 Wire.
p. Restart the engine.
q, If the code reappears:
r. Replace all the Spark Plugs.

Hyundai Excel 97 will not start, cranks well.


Does your car have an electronic distributor or a contact point system? If it's electronic. proably the igniter inside the distributor is gone. Let us know how you get on. Cheers.
