2005 Buick LaSabre Limited, will accassionaly start shifting hard into 2nd and 3rd. When car is cut off it will stop doing this, until maybe the next day. What would cause this? I recently had a filter and fluid change in transmission and it started the day i had it done.

2 areas I would check unplug mass air sensor see if runs better its flat sensor near air filter , and u might need throttle position sensor for the hard shift

probably just your transmission being old and wear and tear catching up to it. engine braking is a good thing in a manual but since automatics cant judge how far to let out a clutch mechanism that doesnt exist to make it smooth, it usually causes more wear and tear than its worth. maybe time for a transmission rebuild and time to leave engine braking to manual transmissions. $30 brake pads vs $2000 transmission. hope this helps ya
Probably a shift solinoid in the gear box. My commodore has 2 (1st & 2nd) & (3rd & 4th) my 3 / 4 solinoid went so went 1st 2nd 3rd but not to 4th until I replaced it.
Honestly, while there is a chance that there is a bigger problem, it sounds more like its time for a transmission service. Hard thunking shifts when starting or stopping with no other apparent symptoms on older vehicles can usually be corrected by a transmission flush. if you pull out your tranny dipstick and the fluid is any darker than bright red and/or smells burnt (smell should make you cringe a bit) then take it to a shop and get it flushed out. I recommend a service center that uses a BG power flush unit. These services seem expensive on the surface but only have to be done about once every 3 years and can prevent more costly and involved repairs down the road.
