Question about 2008 Nissan Altima

2 Answers

I have a 2008 Nissan Altima and I took it today to have any oil change. I was told that I have a "bad oil cooler". I am female and I have very little knowledge of a cars structure unfortunately. What kind of price range am I looking at for repair? How difficult is this to fix on your own?

This sounds kind of odd. Most cars don't have an oil cooler. Usually trucks (especially with towing package) have an oil cooler. If the car is an automatic then you have a cooler for the transmission "oil" but it is usually part of the radiator. I would look around on line and first see if you can find a Nissan site that mentions this vehicle having an oil cooler. Unless your car is leaking oil or oil pressure reads way off center (if you have oil gauge in dash) I would be thinking you are not getting a correct answer. If car shows no major issue with oil I wouldn't be spending money on fixing an "oil" issue. Especially if car did not come with a dedicated oil cooler.

As posted by person above there is video on line. You should see if it is just a gasket leaking or if cooler itself failed. Replacing a seal is much cheaper than buying new parts.

I thought that was funny because I never heard of an "oil cooler", but I did a search on, "oil cooler Nissan Altama 2008" and found a link to, "how to replace oil cooler nissan altima 2008" where there were several youtube videos. There were other links as well that told the prices. So do some research and you'll know what you're dealing with. Maybe you could do it yourself. Have a look and see.

2014 Altima -I got an oil change at Midas (worst mistake ) about two months ago. Apparently the guy half assed it and my car started smoking under the hood after I drove off. Brought it back left again and...

Their must be some oil stored somewhere and it is dripping on your exhaust manifold, but never pressure wash your engine, could cause worse problems,in time the smell will go away, just be patient. It will burn off in time.

Where is oil cooler on 2008 altima and how to relace gasket it is leaking

Look for the oil filter. The cooler is right behind it. Remove the l filter. Use a large socket to remove the center stud that the filter screws onto. Pull the cooler back far enough to remove the old gasket (you do not need to pull off the coolant hoses to do this). Clean up the area, install new gasket, install center bolt, install filter, start the engine, and check for leaks.

Nizzan 02 Black smoke coming out tailpipe and consumption of oil

Black smoke is caused by excess fuel that has entered the cylinder area and cannot be burned completely. Poor fuel mileage is also a common complaint when black smoke comes out of the tailpipe. Black smoke out the tailpipe is the least cause for alarm. Excess fuel will usually effect engine performance, reduce fuel economy, and produce a fuel odor. Some of the causes of excess fuel are a carburetor that is out of adjustment, a faulty fuel pump, a leaky fuel injector, or a faulty engine computer or computer sensor. If black smoke is present, check the engine oil to make sure excess fuel has not contaminated it. Do not start the engine if a heavy, raw fuel smell can be detected in the engine oil.
