It could be telling you to shift into overdrive or shift out of overdrive....I'm not saying you don't know how to drive ...I have to eliminate the obvious...Also double check trans fluid level...Everytime you shut the engine off and then start it again the trans Has reset itself and overdrive is always off ..If you are heading for a long drive on an interstate hit the overdrive button at around 60 mph ...Or you can use your ear and listen to the shifting of trans and you will know when it is time to shift to overdrive....If you never use overdrive especially when you have needed to ..,it can cause problems as well..but not definitlely....It could have a false code unless you hear a problem in the trans...You can get safety glasses and disconnect neg.battery cable ..,then reconnect cable ....,this will clear all fault codes......Then test drive on highway and use the overdrive switch to see if it sets another flash code...If it does you need to scan it with an OBD SCANNER to read codes....It could possibly be the trans shift solenoid......

Richard: It seems to me the customer is saying the OD light is flashing, which is a visable warning. The system software uses that light to convey a problem to the driver. The CEL may be on but not necessarily. A flashing OD light indicates an issue with the TCC.

When the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) isn't engaging or locks in engagement the light flashes a warning...The TCC solenoid may stick due to dirty transmission fluid...If the Check Engine Light
(CEL) is not lit have your transmission fluid changed...If it is lit the code is probably pointing at a defective TCC, Computer (PCM) or the clutch itself... you can take the vehicle to an auto parts store and have them read and define the trouble code for free...saailer

If the OD light is flashing then you have faults, it maybe the scan tool can't read the Trans control module codes.

My on/off overdrive light went out 6 mos ago.Now when going on freeway the RPM rev on high stuck fo several min. around #3 on speedometer. What could be the problem and how much it might cost to fix?

Its not just the light, you are not using all of the gears. Some of these vehicles have computer hookups which will diagnose the internal trans problems.

Check your trans fluid of course, but get the vehicle tested. Some tests are free at Autozone or Advance autoparts.

Many of the new vehicles use electric solenoids to shift with; the Overdrive is tied into the Torque converter lockup.

There are a few solinoid packs that could be faulty, your best move would be get it to a trans shop to be tested and repaired correctly. further driving will only do more damage.

The overdrive light flashing and shifted hard. 2001 f250 deisel

This is going to be a shift solonoid problem. they are located on the bottom of the trans inside the trans pan. I would have it checked soon before it does internal damage will save you a lot of money.

Good Luck, And i hope this helps a bit.

sounds like a stuck valve. I'm still new to transmission stuff so I could be wrong. he could probably get a transmission rebuild book and maybe just do it himself. it would be the cheapest unless you knows someone

Your transmission fluid contain water, thats why the colour of the fluid changed to pink. And of such the clutch is slipping causing the engine to reve up before shifting - Check transmission cooler.
