Do not shift into park and move the steering wheel to lock it. It will lock itself if the vehicle is moved or someone tries to steel it. Reason is that the lock pin hsas many holes to drop into and if you lock it when you have turning pressure on in it. You will lock it with pressure on the lock pin.
Second, always set your parking brake before, not after putting it in park. Never put your front tires against a curb and put it in park without letting the vehile roll away from the curb.. An don't hang you car on a slope by putting it in park. Parking brake always befor parking gear and hands off steering wheel when placing in park. Try it, you'll like it.. forcing your shifter to come out of park can cause damage to the shifting componants. Let me know how it works for you. - Ned_

I just need to ask, Is this problem on flat ground? Soounds like pressure on the parking pawl. Maybe it would be best to hace the trans pan dropped and the parking pawl inspected just in case its got a problem. You don't need it failing when you are relying on it.. Please let me know if they find something wrong with the pawl. Thank you, Ned

2003 Jeep Liberty Sport. Shifting issue on it?

There are some ideas in the videos, but the first thing to do would be to check for DTCs (diagnostic trouble codes). Is the check engine light on?

Ignition key won't turn, gear shift is stuck in park

Turn your steering wheel and turn your key at the same time. GM vehicles have issues with the ignition switch not turning when the steering wheel is turned too far to the left or right.

How do i manually unlock gear shifter

If you cannot shift out of PARK (P), ease the pressure on the shift lever. Push the shift lever all the way into PARK (P) as you maintain brake application. Then move the shift lever into the gear you want. If you are still having a problem shifting, then have your vehicle serviced soon.

I have a 2000 Nissan frontier crew cab 2wd 3.3 motor with automatic,in the mornings I will warm it up and when I put it in drive I have to wait from 30 to 45 seconds to a minute before it goes in gear

please check fluid level again

use this technique please
DRIVE FOR 15-30 MINUTES TO WARM UP TRANNY
1 find FLAT GROUND
2START ENGINE WITH FOOT ON BRAKE

3 PUT IT INTO DRIV- WAIT15 SECONDS

SHIFT INTO EVERY GEAR AND LEAVE FOR 15 SEC-30 SEC BEFORE NEXT GEAR

RETURN TO PARK

CHECK FLUID LEVEL- ADD AS NEEDED- IT SHOULD NOT SMELL BURNT if this happens in every gear while driving, may be torque converter- take to good tranny shop for inspection- happy trails

Vechile will not shift into park or reverse

The first thing to check is the linkage. Sometimes the linkage will slip, Block the wheels on the car (both front and rear) to prevent rolling. Locate the shift linkage on your transmission, and loosen the nut. You should be able to move the shift lever through all the gears, including "P" and "R". Place the transmission shift lever in "Park" (on the transmission) then move the shift lever (inside the car) in the "P" position and tighten the nut (not a bad idea to use a new locking nut here) You should now be able to shift through all gears. If this does not work, you have a more serious problem that may include a worn or broken belt or broken parking pawl inside the transmission.

Changed trans filter now it will not shift stays in low gear, fluid is good correct instalation, nothing out of the ordinary

disconnect your positive battery terminal first, then check your car by starting put it into first gear manually shifting up through the gears with your foot on the brake waiting 10 to 15 secs in each gear working your way through from first to park. Then you want to start in first and manually shift gears as your moving to see if they shift up only go in forward gears.

1999 Regal GS -stalls, starting trouble, won't shift now

the batt is suspect...take it to autozone, or other place, they'll check it out free......the shifting out of park is a seperate issue, the pawl for the steering/shifter is not working properly....did you notice if the steering wheel would turn when the shifter is stuck?....probably not....when this happens try to turn the wheel back and forth-not hard but not gently- a little graphite dust sprayed in there would help.......hope this helps you out
