My sunroof makes a grinding noise and fails when opening/closing

My 1996 toyota camry has a power sunroof. it recently "broke". when i tried to open it, it made a horrible grinding noise and only opened partially. when i tried to close it, it made the same noise and "closed" less successfully then it opened. i was able to push it closed while using the close button, and haven't used it since.
is there a mechanical option?
what's wrong?
how much will it cost to fix?

There is no mechanical option electric only, the drive unit has stripped it's teeth and needs to be replaced, repair cost $300 and up depending on whats wrong

How do i close the sunroof on my 1999 toyota camry? it is stuck open with the bottom shade stuck.

you may have to strip out the roof lining to gain access to the sunroof component if you cant pull the sun visor free , dont keep pressing the power button as could at the least blow the fuse , at worst burn out the motor

97 Camry Sunroof will tilt, does not close all the way, will not

The side steel mechanism maybe jammed or worn, or possible foreign object jammed within the mechanism. Ii will require taking the sunroof apart, unless you can free it. Possible sunroof mechanism replacement. Hopefully this helps

My '95 camry sunroof won't open; only makes gear grind when trying to slide open; tilt works; would like to try to fix myself; any idesa where to start?

go to a junk yard where you can pull your own parts find a camry that is around your same year rip the headliner out and pull the complete sunroof asembly. make sure you get the wiring harness with it. Then put that in your car (will take a lot longer to put it in your car because you will have to be careful with the headliner and intereor parts. It shouldnt take you longer than about 4 hours to take out the old one and put the new one in assuming that you are mechanically inclined. this will be the most cost effective way to fix it. if you have any questions feal free to e-mail me at [email protected].
