Car takes 3 times key turn to start. no starter

97 Isuzu rodeo. It has just begun to not start on the 1st or 2nd key turn. It has on the 3rd- there is no starter noise, grind or click, just nothing and then it turns over. I have a new battery and alternator in it. Is it the starter or starter solenoid? I'd like to replace only what's necessary.

thanks

Get second key remote

Go to the dealers and pay an arm and a leg. Key Smith is a better option, probably half the price of the dealer.

Then there is Ebay. Possibly cheaper again, but you still need a Smith, if time is not a problem.

2001 isuzu rodeo doesnt always start. new

Dirty terminals, happens all the time. Did you have the battery tested? Or just know it's OK? Did you check the water? How about the electrolytes? Get the terminals cleaned off with a wire brush, and scrape the insides, make sure they are tight. I have replaced more batteries this week, must be the weather. One was stone dead, 5 volts and still started the car?? Couldn't believe it, good car. The other 2 were dead with 12+ volts but wouldn't start anything, both got new terminals, and both got cleaned up. NO problems. Check it out. Lastly, the solenoid in the starter could be bad if everything else checks out, whack it with a hammer while turning the key, if it jumps, you found it.

Vibration in drivetrain

You actually answered your own question. Your transmission is slipping. The reason that it's vibrating is that it isn't downshifting to 1st gear to start. It sounds like it's either in 2nd or 3rd. The leak may have a lot to with it. I'm afraid you need to find your nearest transmission repair shop ASAP.
