Sounds like you have a pinhole leak in a hose which is spraying coolent on a hot engine part that evaporates it on contact making it hard to track down.

If you smell steam/water/antifreeze inside the vehicle, then most likely you have a heater core issue. If it is more 'overheating' smell outside of the vehicle, it could be overflow container leaking on hot parts, leaking hose, radiator leak, etc.

Not Overheating, Smells like really hot antifreeze after I drive, a/c ok heater heats but when stopped air gets cold...stummped..thermostat?, Leak?

check your hoses and make sure its not getting low because when it gets low the hoses can get hot enough to expand and spit out antifreeze without overheating

I have a 2001 Toyota Camry that is overheating. I can smell burnt antifreeze. The radiator is full of antifreeze, but the reserve tank drains quickly. It appears there is no circulation. There is a small...

The overheating could be a stuck thermostat, or a failed water pump among other things. If you are loosing coolant faster than the leak on the hose, you may be burning it out the exhaust pipe. Which would point to engine problems.
If the temp gauge is not showing the engine is hot, and the fan is not coming on, what you are smelling may only be the drip blowing onto the exhaust pipe. The engine may not be running hot.
A mechanic would use an infered thermometer or a scanner to "read" the engine temp to verify it is overheating.
There is a chance the system is not actually full and has air pockets in it which would need to be bled out.

My 2001 mazda millenia ran hot, we put water in it and it still ran hot does it sound like the thermostat?

If your car ran hot, you may need to check the radiator for a leak. You always need to add antifreeze/coolant when you add water to your car. Check you owner's manual for the type they suggest and the proper mix of water to antifreeze/coolant. I had to get a head on my motor shaved when my car ran hot and later I had to get the hoses replaced. My radiator cap died following my replacing the radiator as it was plastic and when the car overheated it damaged the cap. How long was the car running hot? You don't want to be a penny wize or a pound foolish when it comes to engine overheating problems. You can repair on the cheap now and pay a lot more in the long run. Also, in the future when your car runs hot, you can turn on the heater --yes even when it is hot outside--I recommend opening up the windows. The heater fan will help to dissipate the heat from the car engine. It does work. I hope these help. Also go to a reputable repair shop. It could be your thermostat they can have check valves which get messed up but you need to check to see if it is your radiator or if there is a leak there or in a hose.

if you smell anti freeze you have a leak. an overheating condition is caused by a bad thermostat, a bad water pump, clogged coolant system or air trapped in the line. have the coolant system pressure checked to locate the leak. it is probably very small that's boiling away before you have a chance to see it. and this is why the system appears full.

Either its the heater core or the thermostat

your heater core is definitley leaking and your blower is pushing the vapor into the cabin. It will only get worse. You can minimize the smell by not running your heater or defroster, but you wont prevent the coolant from leaking and potentially getting worse. Sorry to say, the core will need pulled and repaired or replaced. Sometimes stop leak additives will solve the problem if its not too severe. I have never been a fan of them, its only a band aid in my view. also if u got pets afoid leeting they smell the antifreeze very toxic can kill pets easily. hope this helps. rate above 4* cheers

02 Alero not overheating, no heat

When you say not leaking antifreeze has your coolant level gone down at all? and is it that you have seen no leaks where you park it? What worries me is you can smell it when warming up, have you felt the interior floors to see if damp and do you get any condensation if put blower onto screen, if so then heater matrix is leaking if not could be down to headgasket and/or cylinder head leak.
