First thing is to measure voltage across battery (should be 12.6volts). If less than 12v then battery may be in poor condition and most things will not work properly. Before renewing the battery when the engine is running again check voltage across battery. It should read 14.4volts; this is the recharge voltage supplied by the alternator. If the voltage is less than 14v or the voltage supplied is intermittent then change the carbon brushes and perhaps the voltage regulator on the alternator (less than £10 on line)

I have the same problem,it's the switch inside the turn signal
assembly.Unfortunately the entire assembly switch and all has to be
replaced.
Hope this helps.
SOURCE: 1999 f150 turn signals and brake lights out. High mast still work
The signal lights work through a relay but the brake lights work through the signal switch, if both are out I think you'll find the problem is the signal switch.

check the wiring from the tailights back to the fuse panel, it sounds like an open connection. if i recall correctly check under the dash on the drivers side near the fuse panel for a bunch of wires in a bundle and look carefully for a wire or two that are cut/shorted/or seperated, you can also check under the drivers side kick panel by the hood release.

make sure the back window is all the way up then try the wiper, if it still does not work then it is a sensor for the rear window (about $30.00) if you installed it yourself

I would check if they also run off of a relay, You could have a wire that is either broke or it is grounding out somewhere.
