You need to rebuild the transmission,it's over heating. May want to check your transmission cooler first .

Take it to the dealer, there is a GM Bulliten out for this issue on all new W body cars, most notably the Monte Carlos and Impalas. It's air getting trapped in the system causing a blockage of flow for the heater under low pressure/idle situations.
What you gotta do is jack up the RH side of the vehicle about 1ft off the ground or so...then with the vehicle idle-ing w/heat on, bleed the system at the fill port. There's a little more to it then that, but tilting the vehicle to help get the air out is part of the trick.
SOURCE: shift handle is very tight
You might want to try sparying a lubricant down in the shifter lever surround itself...sometimes when soda or other sugary drinks get spilled in that area, the release mechanism gets gummed up, not allowing the catch to release properly...try some WD40 or some other pennetrating spray oil.
Spray it into every crack and crevice around the shifter, and all of the plastic parts too. Wipe off the excess and allow it about 20 minutes to penetrate deep into the parts of the shifter. Put your key into the ignition and WITHOUT STARTING THE CAR AND YOUR FOOT ON THE BRAKES, keep sliding the shifter into every gear over and over again. Try this first in order to see if this fixes the problem...if this doesn't do it, you may need to invest some $$$ to have it looked at. I know this sounds simple, but it could save you some serious money if this fixes your problem.

You will have to have the solenoid body replaced in the tranny and have the PCM reprogrammed.
SOURCE: 2001 Monte Carlo - brakes squeal "whistle"
Actually - I had the same problem and replaced my brakes 4 times in a year. YES 4 TIMES because of the whistling. I switched from metallic to ceramic pads and works like a charm! Ceramic will not allow the noise, plus I have found to have much better control over braking and short distances.
