How to Eliminate annoying Intermittent Warning Chimes from a 1994 Continental Instrument Cluster?

See also the earlier 2009 question on Inst Clust for 1994 Continental. I have a good working solution for this aggravating problem that many 94 Continental instrument clusters have. Here is the chronology of what I did. Hopefully this will lead you to a good solution and keep you from wasting time and money as I initially did. In August of 2013 I installed the alternate instrument cluster that I discussed in the earlier 2009 question. Switching Instrument clusters is a lot of work and some money, even if you do it yourself. Plus, it didn't help! I was still getting those very annoying chimes. I am an automotive engineer and I knew that my oil pressure was just fine, and that this was just a false warning. Actually I started getting intermittent chime warnings from the 4 gauge indicators corresponding to the top 4 pins on the 14-pin connector (pins 1, 2, 7 and 8). The chimes were the annoyance, not the fluctuating false gauge readings, so I used the shop manual to find the wire from the instrument warning cluster to the chime module. I cut that single wire and soldered a 16-inch pigtail wire to each side. The other ends of the two pigtails I soldered to a simple on-off rocker switch available from any auto parts dealer. I cut an 11/16 inch hole in the long, narrow lower dash panel for this rocker switch to the left of the rear window defogger rocker switch. When this switch is toggled off, there are no instrument warning chimes. This does not affect any of the other chimes, such as key left in ignition, lights left on, seatbelt not connected, etc. This is a great solution if you want to keep and drive your old Continental like I do. The wire to look for under the dash near the steering column is a Tan wire with a Yellow stripe, and comes out of Pin #4 (from the left) of a 10-pin connector. It is the Chime Generator line from the Message Center to the Chime Module. I have had this toggle switch for a year and a half now, and almost never toggle it on. The Continental is a pleasure to drive again without those annoying instrument warning chimes. Do this instead of trying to replace your instrument cluster.

This is the simplest & easiest fix, to make your '94 Cont. drivable, without having to listen to incessant CHIMES beeping every five minutes, due to faulty sensors and electrical glitches from the junk message system. Go under the dash, on the right side of the steering column and remove the plug (10 wires) from the 'warning chime module.' There is a tan/yellow wire in that plug on pin #7--that is the "tone generator" wire. CUT IT.!!! Now, when all of those faulty inputs try to get to the warning chime module--they CAN'T! Problem solved--no more beeping. This does not disrupt the chime from sounding if you open the door with your keys in the ignition, or with the lights still on--it continues to protects you from THAT. Remember to watch your OWN coolant & oil levels--to make sure no REAL problems exist--and you're good to go!

Behind the instrument panel, on the right side of the A/C module

Looks like it has several connectors to it, just pull the one connector to stop the chime (warning) your hearing. Assume you have one on all the time? annoying isn't it .

  • Key-in-ignition warning switch
  • Door ajar switch
  • Driver and passenger safety belt minder switch (integral to the safety belt buckle)
  • Vehicle security module
The instrument cluster and the restraints control module (RCM) control the following chimes:
  • Safety belt warning (repetitive chime)
  • Key-in-ignition warning (repetitive chime)
  • Headlamps on warning (repetitive chime)
  • Door ajar warning (single tone)
  • Air bag warning (repetitive chime) The following 5 distinct chime rates are used to indicate warning:
    • safety belt warning is 1 chime per second

How do we get a 2006 Uplander to stop chiming?

What is it chiming ? Chimes for different reasons , headlamps on , seat belt not buckled , etc.... What warning light is lit on the instrument cluster ? if any . seat belt , air bag's etc...

Audible Warnings Description and Operation
The audible warnings alert the driver of a system concern or a critical vehicle condition. The following lists the audible warning priority and the pulse rate:
Fast rate chime (200 pulses per minute)
Medium rate chime (150 pulses per minute)
Slow rate chime (50 pulses per minute)
Single chime
Fasten Safety Belt Warning
The inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) activates the fasten safety belt audible warning for 5-8 seconds. The fasten safety belt warning sounds and the fasten seat belt indicator illuminates when the following occurs:
• The ignition switch is in RUN, BULB TEST, or START position.
• The SDM detects that the driver's seat belt is not buckled (signal is low).
If the seat belt is buckled before the ignition is in RUN, BULB TEST, or START position, the chime does not sound. If the seat belt is buckled while the chime is sounding, the chime stops.
Key-In-Ignition Warning
The instrument panel cluster (IPC) activates the key-in-ignition audible warning. The key-in-ignition warning sounds when the following occurs:
• The ignition switch is in OFF, LOCK, or ACCY position.
• The body control module (BCM) determines that the driver's door is open (signal is low).
• The BCM determines that the key-in-ignition switch is closed (signal is low).
Lights On Warning
The instrument panel cluster (IPC) activates the lights on audible warning. The lights on warning sounds when the following occurs:
• The key is not in the ignition.
• The body control module (BCM) determines that the drivers door is open (signal is low).
• The BCM determines that the headlamp switch is in the park or head position.
Rear Parking Assist
The rear object sensor control module activates the audible warning. The audible warning sounds whenever any of the indicators are illuminated on the rear parking assist display. For a description of the rear parking assist system refer to Object Detection Description and Operation.
Turn Signal Reminder
The instrument panel cluster (IPC) sounds the turn signal reminder once per each flash of the turn signal lamps when:
• The ignition switch is in the RUN position.
• The turn signal switch is in either turn position, sensing, within 1 second, an open to B+ transition in the turn signal control circuit (left or right turn).
• The vehicle has traveled a distance of 1.2 km (0.75 mi) by counting pulses on the vehicle speed input circuit.
The IPC turns off the turn signal reminder when either the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position or to the OFF position, or the turn signal switch returns to the OFF position, sensing, within 1 second, no transitions from open to B+ in either of the turn signal control circuits (left turn or right turn).
Additional Chimes
The following chimes will turn on when an associated indicator turns on in the instrument panel cluster (IPC):
• Low Fuel Indicator
• Low Oil Pressure Indicator
• OVER SPEED indicator
For a description of an indicator refer to Indicator/Warning Message Description and Operation.
For diagnosis of an indicator refer to Symptoms - Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.

Your have a problem with one of these systems , your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop. They would do diagnostic's to find the problem .

Do any indicators illuminate when the chime sounds?
Go to Symptoms - Instrument Panel, Gages and Console
Go to Step 3
3
Turn the ignition OFF.
Remove the key from the ignition.
Turn the headlamp switch to OFF.
Close all of the vehicle doors.
Open one or more of the vehicle doors
Does the chime sound at all times regardless if the doors are open or closed?
Go to Step 15
Go to Step 4

Close all of the vehicle doors.
With a scan tool, observe the LF Door Ajar Switch parameter and the RF Door Ajar Switch parameter in the instrument panel cluster BCM/Inputs data list.
