There are several parts that could cause that message, and getting it to a garage to properly diagnose it would be a great idea. If it's the I think it was 2001 to 2009 model, one huge culprit for that error, especially if it is intermittent and more often seen in hotter weather, is the "clockspring" or steering wheel position sensor. It determines the position of the steering wheel to help the anti-skid system determine how to apply breaking or torque to the wheels as needed. It's a known failure point and easy to replace, but can cost between about $250 and $350 easily. Other culprits could be a yaw rate sensor or a sensor in the wheel area that determines the rotation speed of the wheel. That part is super easy to get to and cheap to replace, but usually don't go bad.
Like everything else, it depends what is wrong and there is the width of the Atlantic Ocean between the best and worst cost scenario.
The light came on because the brain detected a fault, not because it needs routine service. The most common faults are at one of the hubs with chafed wiring or faulty sensors or on older vehicles the reluctor rings sometimes corroded so badly the air gap became excessive, occasionally they just broke up and fell off...

I have a Volvo S40 2.0 Desiel and the Anit Skid Warning Light has come on.. Can you advise what this problem could be and what the next step is in getting it sorted
my volvo car dose want to start when i want to switch on the say( ANTI-SKID TEMPORARILY OFF) and all light right hand said coming red and left hand said coming yello.
Depending on your financial situation, you can drive it like it is for now. You will not have any protection from the anti-skid as far as its control of your braking, but the brakes will work just like the old brakes where the driver controlled them. I am not recommending you drive indefinately, but in most cases the anti-skid light just means that it has detected a failure in the anti-skid system and had relinquished control of the brakes back to the driver.
This occurred to me the other day. They thought it was the alternator and battery, but nothing. What was the problem with her car. Please help, I'm going nuts trying to figure this out!
