We tried this afternoon to change the timing nelt for this car of mine, astra vauxhall 1.8 petrol , automatic engine after it has just stopped on the road , when we opened we fond the teeth of the timing belt warped, so to we tried to put a new ome, now the car is not starting, we think we are missing its timing markings.

The 3 liter mitsubishi is pretty prone to this actually. You would have to tear it down to see what happened, but yes it's likely that you have a bent valve and/or hole in the top of a piston from a valve.

put the dot on cam gears in between 2 dots on engine case. crank needs to be at TDC

is the belt the same size as the one that come off? try taking the tensionor all the way off and then fit the belt

For 1999 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 16V timing belt replacement interval is: 60000 km (37500 miles), or 48 months (4 years). Replace also tensioner roller, (the same interval) !
If you don't know precisely if timing belt has been done, then replace it obligatory !!!
