Those distributors get a lot of heat and vibration. Check all wires inside distributor and coil for loose connections.
Also check the main relay and fuse.

William, your car uses a ballast resistor that causes what you describe. This is usually a ceramic white, rectangular piece, mounted on the firewall.
The voltage to the coil has to be dropped to 8 volts, or so. Chrysler handles that with a ballast resistor and it fails.
To test, you can wire across the resistor and see if you have spark.
My recollection is one side is for the coil and one side for the wipers or something like that.

This is a common problem.

No spark on the plugs of 318(m40)

you don`t say what year this is so I will guess this has a distributor, check for power at the ignition coil and coming out of the coil on the wires. then check for spark coming out of the coil. check the distributor cap and rotor for cracks and burn areas that will allow the spark to go to ground and not the plugs.

Where are the spark plugs located in a 2004 GMC Envoy, 6 cyl

Hello erikkaloves,

The spark plugs are under the coils. To get to them you must remove the plastic cowling from the top of the engine. Then you will see the coils, there will be six coils, one for each cylinder each looks the same with an aluminum heat sink on the top. These are removed by removing and the retaining the screw and wires.

Once removed the spark plugs can be access but before you remove the spark plugs make sure the spark plug well is clear of foreign material. Dirt or debris in the spark plug well can fall into the engine and cause damage.

96 dodge dakota, with a 318 motor will not start, not getting spark. could it be a pick up coil, and how do you test a pick up coil?

Hi, Hope I can help you.
I do not know how you have checked for spark, but lets start from the beginning.
Lets start with an ignition systems check.
1. I want you to remove the high voltage coil wire. ( That's the wire in the center of the distributor cap.) Using a good pair of insulated pliers. I want you to hold it about 1/4 inch from a good engine ground. Now you will need a bit of help from a partner. Get them to turn the key and crank the engine. You should see a bright blue and well defined spark. Ok, If you have spark I want you to slowly move the coil wire away from the engine ground. As you do this I want you to pay attention to the coil tower. (The coil tower is where the other end of the coil wire is attached.) What your looking for is arcing and sparking at the coil tower. If this happens then you need to replace the coil with a new one. If this does not happen then your coil is working fine, and we will have to move on.
Note if you do not get spark from the coil wire replace the coil.

2. Ok if you have spark now we have find out if the spark is making it to the spark plugs. How are we going to do this? By checking the rotor, distributor cap, spark plug wires and spark plugs.First lets remove the distributor cap. This will allow use to inspected the rotor and the distributor cap. What your looking for is, cracks, carbon tracks and wear at the tip of the rotor. On the distributor ,look inside the cap for cracks, carbon tracks and wear on the terminals. If you find any of this replace the distributor cap and rotor. ( Note if you have any doubt of the condition of the rotor or the cap replace them.) Next lets check your spark plug wires. Lets pull off one of the spark plug wires from the spark plug side. Now inspect the wire connection for a white crusty powder. If you find crust replace your wires. Now you should check all of them the same way, but if even one has corrosion replace them all. You are going to have to inspect the wire its self . Going down the whole length of the wire. Holes cracks burn Marks and other damage. Once again if you find any damage replace them all.
I hope this will help you and good luck to all the read this FixYa

Engine light on

They are still looking for a cause because it isnt misfiring right now or because they cant find the cause of the stored misfire codes ?
If it is misfiring right now and they cant figure it out then perhaps you should find new mechanics !
I have seen a lot of bad coils on the PT.
Misfire is usually caused by spark plug wires first, spark plugs 2nd, and coil third.
If it isnt misfiring now, spray down the wires with water. If it misfires after that replace the spark plug wires and spark plugs and try again.
If it still misfires then the problem will likely be the coil.

Car misfire BMW 318i automatic 2002 model

can you tell which cylinder is affected? If a spark plug gap is to wide, the coil may have trouble creating a hot enough spark to jump it. Check your plugs for proper gaps befor looking to the coil. Good Luck _Ned_

1985 gran fury. i've changed the distributor, the brain, the coil, the ign. relay, and the rotor and cap. the car fires when it wants to . more like it starts every other day i have no clue what to do

I'm going to assume you have a 318? Also going to assume that the wires and plugs are in good shape? When it's not starting, do you have spark? If not, do you see spark for any part of the time when you crank it? Have you made sure that the carb is OK and not flooding the engine?
What I just said is'nt a "fix...yet...I need to know this stuff first.
