After it starts does it idle good before you step on the gas , will it keep idling before you step on the gas ? Is the check engine light on ? What engine does the vehicle have ? This vehicle came with 5.0 L ,5.7L ,6.5 L , 7.4 L engines ,gas or diesel ? Three specific data sensors provide the vehicle control module (VCM) with the basic information for the fuel management portion of its operation. Three specific signals to the VCM establish the engine speed and air density factors. The engine speed signal comes from the distributor high resolution circuit. The VCM uses this information to determine engine speed (RPM). Air density is derived from intake air temperature (IAT) and manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor inputs. The IAT sensor measures the air temperature that is entering the engine. The IAT signal works in conjunction with the MAP sensor to determine air density. As the intake manifold pressure increases, the air density in the intake manifold also increases and additional fuel is required. This information from the IAT and MAP sensors is used by the VCM to control injector pulse width. One of these sensors could be bad or a plugged catalytic converter .

1995 Lexus Es300 starts and idles great, however, when put in forward or reverse it dies

Sounds like you have a serious vacuum leak. Don't bother checking the fuel pump in tank, it's working, otherwise it wouldn't start and idle. Vacuum loss will cause it to die because when you open the throttle even a little, it gets too much air and not enough fuel at the same time. Check that all vacuum lines are connected and not off or badly cracked.

1990 CUTLASS CIERA,DIED ONE DAY,CHANGED FUEL PUMP,FUEL FILTER,STARTED,RAN,IDLED,BUT WHEN YOU STEP ON THE GAS HARD IT JUST DIES.WILL START BACK UP,AND THEN THE SAME THING ,STEP DOWN,BOGS THEN DIES,NOW WONT...

sometimes the tank decomposes from the inside flaking off and clogging filters, pumps, etc. always a good idea to completly remove tank and flush to check for same when changing the fuel pump. if that's your problem, you will need a new gas tank

My 84 caprice classic it has a very shakie idle

When you start your car, you step on the gas and turn the key, you have set the high idle feature on the carb as part of the warmup sequence. When you step on the gas again, you kick high idle off ...if premature, the engine is cold and it runs ruff, and wikll likely stall under some circumstances until you have reached operating temp. The reason for the ruffness ...is gasoline becomes 'gas' better when the engine is at operating temp than when the engine is cold.

Your battery is getting tired. When you step on the gas and the lights get brighter, it is because you are running the alternator at a higher speed and you are making more electricity which the lights are more than happy to gobble up.

Keep in mind your car is notonly a Caprice Classic ... it is a classic, 26 year old vehicle. It needs a little more TLC than a newer model.

My 88 chevy 2500 3/4 ton runs, but when given gas

check your fuel filter under the left side of the vehicle on the frame. if this proves to good, your next step might be checking your catalytic convertor. have you checked all of your vacuum lines? one thing you can do is have your friend inside to start the vehicle and while it is idling and the air cleaner is off, look inside at the fuel injector and you throttle it and see if the injector is spraying fuel.

Starts but doent stay running

Does it die if you give it gas? If so you may have a clogged fuel filter. If it just runs rough and then dies you may need a tune up. Have you had maintenance performed on the vehicle recently? May be your first step. This should get you on the right track by checking these few things first.

99 TDI Jetta engine dies 3-5 seconds after startup.

the glow plugs probably need replacing, it seems they are not heating up the gas enough.
