Take your car home and don't drive it untal you get it checked. You can blow you engine.
1. Check your engine oil level, you may just be low.
2. you don't say what engine so, if you add your oil at a cap on the valve cover warm up the car and have someone remove the cap and look inside with a light as you rev up the engine. they should see oil splashing around. If not shut it off. Could be your oil pump is going out BUT
3. Add a quart of engine flush ( make sure the engine is one QT low on oil don't add to full oil level) Run your engine 5 min with Motor Flush. Then drain oil, replace filter and oil and check your gauge for idle pressure. You could just have a slug clog.
4. If this does not work (I think it will) take it to a friend recommend shop. Hope this helps MIKE

Mike, for many years there has been a oil pressure switch either on or off, on with oil pressure and off with little to none. This switch cuts off the fuel pump to prevent the engine running with no oil pressure.

What is the mileage on the vehicle? What type of oil are you using, synthetic or conventional oil? Older engines that have a fair amount of wear (loose essentially). I had this problem on two different vehicles. If the oil is not near time to be changed (fairly clean oil) I would get a new oil filter and prepare it by filling it with STP oil treatment. This is thick stuff and will thicken your oil. Remove the old oil filter and put the new one on. Start the engine and let it idle for a minute then shut it off. Check the oil level and add more STP to bring it back up to the full mark. Start it and check the oil pressure. If this helps bring the pressure up then I'd say its time to go to a thicker oil. I switched to 0w40 synthetic after trying 5w30 (5w30 is recommended by mfr.) and have had no more trouble. The thing is that synthetic oil tends to thin more at temperature than conventional oil does.

Is the warning light coming on or do you have a gauge? If you are showing no pressure at low rpms STOP DRIVING it! How many miles - it may simply be time for a rebuild. If not that many miles, confirrm oil pump pickup is clean, check pump and bearing clearances.

My 94 ford thunderbird will sputter and die when i first start it, and will do it when idling at stoplights, the check engine light will also randomly come on. I've checked the oil and transmissio

check your mass airflow sensor,( located on the air intake line, probably close to where it hooks onto the front of the car on driver side ,should be a square box with wires plugged into it) take intake hose off and spray filiment wire with brake cleaner to clean,do not touch wire with tools or hands it will break very easily ,let dry and replace hose and see if that helps.

suspect the oil sending unit, it is mounted at the rear of the engine at the back lip of the intake manifold. I recommend that you install a manual oil gage in the the oil sending unit hole and start the eneine and get an accurate oil pressure reading before you replace the sending unit.....GOOD LUCK

Oil light turns while idling at stoplight

Either the oil is the wrong viscosity, there is a plugged oil filter, or the oil pump is going bad (getting worn out).

That's what comes to mind when I see an oil light turning on, especially at idle.

Good luck on this repair.

Self-adjusting idle brain often idles 1500-2000rpm range.

Faulty oxygen sensor or low fuel pressure can also cause these codes to be set. I'd go for a fuel pressure test when acting up if at all possible just to confirm I have pressure needed. Have heard of coil problems as well. Should be a good blue 1" min. spark from coil.
