My 2004 gmc savanna 3500 shakes from the steering wheel after going 60mph

Before I replaced steering gear box, pitman arm, idler pitman arm, and idler bracket the truck would shake steering wheel really bad when I would go up to 45mph and I needed to slow down in order to control the steering. Now that I replaced with new parts I still have a lil bit shakiness when I'm going 60mph not as bad like it used too though. I need help in trying to figure out what to do next.

I'm guesing you have had your tires balanced and wheels aligned. If this does not help, then you have a broken belt in one of your front tires.

    Hi their
I would like to thank you for helping me with my problem, so that was the problem what you said about the tire having a bad belt.
what I did to figure out if that was the problem I swap the rear tires to the front and went for a test drive and didn't feel no shakiness no more
    Thanks

SOURCE: Need pitman arm replaced and idler arm replaced

The idler isn't bad, Remove cotter pin going through the nut, take off nut, you need a seperator tool to pull apart the arm from the center link, once that is done, remove the two bolts holding it to the frame, remove arm, installation is just reverse.
The pitman arm is a little more to it. Do the same, remove cotter pin, take off nut, and seperate it from the rod, now there is big nut holding it on to the bottom of the steering box, take that nut off (some are a real pain), you will need a pitman arm puller to get it off. Note the position of the arm, need to put new one in same place, pull it off slow, sometimes seals will come with it, put seals back in same way, if they come out. Put some grease on splined shaft, tap new arm on until you can get nut on, tighten up with nut. Hopefully you have any problems. Good luck.

yes you need to unbolt the steering box and drop it a little. not to hard. then you remove the nut and you will have to use a puller most of the time.

SOURCE: 2004 Silverado 2500HD. Airbag/Steering wheel control issue

Try unhooking the positive post on the battery this should reset the system. As far as the radio controls and airbag, this shouldn't be related the changing parts. Try checking the fuse panel for burnt out fuses.

SOURCE: Had the Pitman arm and idler Arm replaced

I have had both the Pitman and Idler Arms, seize almost the same day, on a veh still under warrantee.
I have also replaced many over 45 years, just as general maintenance, before they caused, tire wear or worse. So no big deal!

The other issues will be solved, most likely, by removing the steering wheel and replacing the Clock Spring. Then the air bag will be happy and your wheel buttons, computer and radio, can once again, communicate and work properly.

Follow the proper proceedure in disarming the air bag,so you don't get hurt!!

SOURCE: how to replace a idler arm and pitman arm

You will need the proper tools to remove them which can be rented at auto parts stores. The pitman arm has to pulled off with an pitman arm puller also have to drop steering box I believe to change it. I know we did on my 1996 Tahoe the idler arm can be seperated with a front end fork also available at parts store. You just drive it between the idler arm and tie rod after removing castle nut and cotter pen.

How to replace a power steering gear box

Have the tires straight, lock or secure the steering wheel so it doesn't move. Remove the hoses and steering linkage from the box. Raise the front and remove the drivers tire. Remove the linkage from the pitman arm at the bottom of the box. Use a large hammer to break the linkage free from the arm, don't hit the threads. You will see 3 or 4 large bolts going threw the frame, remove them to drop the box. You will need a pitman arm removal tool to get the arm off the box. You can rent them from the parts store. New boxes come centered, so install the box first, then put the pitman arm on, matching it to the linkage.

K1500 idler arm

There is an idler arm and a pitman arm.
The Pitman connects the steering box to the steering linkage by/through a ball joint. The idler arm should be on the other side by the passenger wheel.

When im driving my 98 4x4 tacoma, it will violently vibrate at speeds of 40mph and then again at 60mph, then drive simi smooth after...any ideas as to what this could be, U-joint? wheel bearings?

Best guess is worn steering tie rods first. it doesn't take much wear for wheel shake to occur in the 4wd versions. next would be other steering components- idler arm and pitman arm. next would be ball joints- these are probably already needing replacement due to 4wd and age.
Good luck

The steering wheel is has too much play in it.

Steering wheel play can be caused by many parts including tie rods, idler arms, pitman arms. drag links, the gear box itself or the shaft and connectors between the steering wheel and the gear box. I would recommend inspecting all of these things and repair or replace as necessary.

When braking between 80-60 kph the steer is

You could have a worn idler arm and pitman arm. The idler arm is more common to wear out before the pitman arm so start with that and have the front end aligned. Inspect all your front end steering components for damaged and worn out parts that need to be replaced.
Thank you for using Fixya, you did replaced your brake rotor when you replaced the brake pads right???

Jeep Grand Cherokee 2004 front end clunking

It would be kind of hard to explain, but you may want to check your wheel bearings. Sounds like your wheel is binding. If you jack the front up, grab your tire, and shake. Sort of like you are trying to turn the wheel your self with out the steering wheel. Then do the same up and down. If you have a lot of play, then your wheel bearing is shot. And with a 4WD, you have to replace it because its sealed, where as on a 2WD, you can tighten them. For the pitman arm, and the gear box, you may have to get a haynes manual to find. But the gear box will be the box that your steering shaft goes into and connects to the tierods. Not too hard to find.
