Plugs and wires are a good start, if they haven't been replaced for a while. I would change the fuel filter and check the air filter. The fuel filter is often overlooked. The ones I change, you wouldn't believe the dirt that's in them.
It sounds as if you have a fuel system problem or either the exhaust may be stopped up. Have the fuel pressure checked it should be at or near 30-35 lbs if not you may need to replace the fuel pressure regulator or the fuel pump. Both are common on parts to fail.
