My sons 99 Neon recently quit running. He said it started but when he put it in drive to pull away, it went backwards then died. Then nothing, the starter wouldnt crank at all. I replaced the starter and upgraded his battery for winter and all seemed fine. Now, two weeks later, the same problem. The first time he told me the car "went backwards in drive" I assumed it was just because he parks on the street with a gentle downgrade behind him. But this time I checked, and it wont roll backwards even in neutral. Is the engine somehow running backwards when it starts up? (didnt think that was possible with a four-cycle) If so, why would that kill the starter? The first one tested bad, havent taken the two-week old starter back yet. BTW- I put the car in drive with the key "on" and the reverse lights are coming on- in drive??? Totally confused.

. I would check the shifter cable. If it broke in reverse while you're son was putting it in drive that would cause it to remain in reverse . Being stuck in reverse would also cause it not to start because it's in gear.

That's certainly worth a look, but doesn't explain it dying, which it never does. Two weeks ago it was the exact same scenario and a new starter fixed him right up. I will check that cable, though. Thanks.

Michael, you nailed that almost dead-on. The cable didnt break, but whatever holds it down to the lever on the transaxle apparently left the vehicle at some point. The cable had jumped off its post, while the car was in reverse. I tapped a washer cap onto the post, problem solved. Thanks!

My 2004 Dodge Neon 2.0. It died after putting it in reverse and won't start?

You are guessing and guessing is expensive. You need an auto-electrician with a pro grade scan tool computer. The electronics diagnostics with give the answer to what failed when you went into reverse. I'll give you a guess, it is something on the gearbox, or a computer network failure between it, the BCM and ECM.

This vehicle certainly has some issues.

I have a 2001 monster Carlo 3.4, was driving and car was running fine all the sudden started losing speed and went to pull off free way and it died. Won't start, Silence when I try to start it.

IF you try to start it and turn the key and get NOTHING. The most likely cause of everything is: The alternator died and quit charging the battery. The battery died while you were driving because there was no alternator charging it. When the battery died, all the ignition signals stopped.

Whats wrong with Helen?

The speed sensor might be bad. I used to own a 99 Mitsubishi Eclipse with the same symptons. The car will start, but will not pass the 1st or 2nd gear, the speedometer will be at 0. I replaced the speed sensor and all the problems went away.

Car died then restarted three times

Run a scan tool to determine problem, if nothing found take the car to the nearest acura service center to check for any recall onthe car.

Dies after running about 2 minutes

It's got all the symptoms of a leak in the fuel line. You may want to start backward at the tank and work your way all the way to the carb to find it but it would be surprising if it was something else. All the best.

2005 Dodge Neon starts but dies right after?

It is the Intake Air Control motor (IAC Motor). Replaced mine and have not had any other problems.
