I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee have replaced the steering rack, inner and outer tie rods, upper and lower ball joints, and quick struts but i still have a metal on metal popping noise around turns, slowing to a stop and going over small bounces... and ideas what is the next step?
05 GC, but what drive line, what engine, what transmission, what transfer case. and evne more important where is the 4wd lever set?
does it make noise in all gears, all transfer case MODES????
sure , buy and electronic stethoscope
like this,
http://www.amazon.com/Steelman-97220-EngineEAR-Diagnostic-Listening/dp/B00396FBRY/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1414326169&sr=8-1-fkmr1&keywords=automotive+electronic+stethoscope+steelman
you clamp the mike to many drive line parts.
transmission, quite at POP time.
transfercase quite?
then move the MIKE to the suspension parts.
you will find it.
thats a lot cash to spend guessing. the tool works like magic
it will show you (heard) what is making noise.
if it cant find the noise, 99%^ its U-joints, after all i can not
clamp the MIKE to drive/prop shafts. .
but that is a big clue,
have you tried spraying all suspension joints with silicon oil spray.
that would be first. way before parts.
are you in the salt belt????? google that.
Last, what 4wd you have, options?
Quadra-Trac-II NV 247
Quadra-Drive NV247
more testing
if you shift the xfr case to neutral just before a bump does it still make noise?
then repeat that for transmission , neutral.
do the tests off road, or far from other cars, and peds.
repeat the test in 2wd selection,
seen here. (im assuming this is what you have, its unstated)(

ps: noise is the most complex problem
it is also very dangerous on cars that only make noise moving.
use a stethoscope. and find this easy an safely.
use real headphones(muffs)
and 2 persons, one drives other listens and barks orders.
win.
on all machines, cars, boats planes, trains , the best and most safe way to find any noise, is to make it happen not moving, bounce car , by hand, and do so as you turn wheels full L/R, or get car on a lift? and make it make noise that way, no BODIES under car, start it and pretend to drive car off the ground. or??? but why not just get it serviced and let them do all that risky stuff???????

SOURCE: torque specs
Hi my name is Allen!
I work for a Dodge Dealership. There are no torque specs for the upper or the lower ball joints on any of the Chrysler Vehicles. As long as you get them as tight as you can they will be fine, don't worry they are held in by road force anyway. Note: Be careful that you don't strip-out the nuts by getting them to tight.
For further asistance you may reach me at FixYa!
SOURCE: i have a very bad vibration in the front suspention 45 to 50 mph
A good bump will make that jeep shimmy real bad If the steering damper
is bad. If the damper has visible oil leak or has more the 20,000
miles on it-Replace it.
SOURCE: 96 jeep grand cherokee laredo popping/grind noise when turning l
Ifound the same condition in the rear end of my 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with 4.0 HO L-6. I opened up the differential and removed the spider gears and axles to get the components out for inspection. I discovered that of the two
clutch packs that are on either side of the axle housing behind the side/axle
gears, the drivers side clutches had a huge break in the main washer "HUGE"
that is directly behind the side/axle gear. Fluid was not unusually dirty but
does show alot of silver clouding from the loss of metals due to the clutches
slipping and grinding when that crack would allow contact loss. Hope that helps
