Sounds like the transmission pump gear may have broken. This will make a "ping" or pop" sound and then the transmission loses all hydraulic pressure. It doesn't leak, but without the pressure from the pump, it cannot generate the pressures needed to move the vehicle. Have the transmission checked and serviced if necessary.

Windstar tranny problem: just got off phone with Northway Transmission of Queensbury, NY Technician said the torque converter had destroyed itself. the pump drive spline in converter broke and took out fins in torque converter it's going to cost me nearly $1600.00 car has only 45000mi on it and I caught it rather quickly and DID NOT TOW had car moved by flatbed/ramp truck otherwise they would have had to completly tear down transmission. (over $2300.00)

My car will crank, but will not reverse or drive.

The linkage from the gear shift to the tranny is severed. It could be as simple as a cotter pin that had come loos, or a nut & bolt connection that fell off from engine & road vibration. Drive it up on ramps, crawl underneath, then follow the connections from the gear shift to the tranny.

If the fluid level is ok then you need the transmission repaired/rebuilt.

Transmission

Did it do it under hard acceleration? or just a normal take off. I have heard of engine mounts or tranny mount bushings getting old (not mileage old but just aging) causing a thump or clunking sound in between shifting. What happens is the tranny actually hits the undercarriage of the vehicle during high torque situations such as shifting gears. I have also seen the mount retaining nut back off of the mounts and the only thing holding everything in place is gravity. Another possibility is drive shaft u-joint problems, but if it were it would probably be making the noise more often. I dont think there is actually anything wrong with the transmission itself as usually when they go bad they dont magically get better. Hope this helps. Good luck!
