If the brake lights stay on when the brake switch wiring connector is disconnected , you have a short somewhere ! Because if disconnected electrical the adjustment on the brake light switch means nothing ! IT'S DISCONNECTED, HELLO !!!!!!!!

The brake switch is a "normally closed" switch, so, disconnected it will be on.

Brake light is controlled by a switch on the brake pedal arm. The switch may need adjustment or be replaced.
Hope this helps.

Do you have a brake fluid accumulator(ABS)? If yes, the pistons/pulsing assembly are worn, and may need to be replaced.

If not, you may have a vacuum leak in the power booster (located on the firewall). Check all hose and clamps for a tight fit/cracks,etc. Vacuum leaks cause intermittent brake failure lights.

You may want to park the vehicle on a clean surface, pump the brakes a few times, and check for brake fluid leaks. If there is a leaking wheel cylinder (back brakes) , caliper (front brakes), or brake line, you will be able to see it.

Leaks cause pressure loss, and, thus, the brake warning light will illuminate.

Brake light switch is either defective or needs to be adjusted. Probably not related to the battery being replaced.

Brake lights stay on after car is off

You may have a failed/failing brake light switch. I would look under the hood, find the brake master cylinder. Generally, the brake light switch is located on the master cylinder. Last time I messed with one, it was easy to fix. The hassle was bleeding the brakes afterward.

1974 VB Bug, brake lights are ON when car is on...stay on when breaks are applied (so virtually driving without break lights as they are always on!

If you look underneath your bug on the driver's side where the master cylinder is you will see 2 electrical plugs plugged into the master cylinder. Each plug has 3 wires. Disconnect both from the master cylinder and see if the brake lights go out. If so, then replace both brake light switches on the master cylinder. You can disconnect one at a time and see if the lights go out that way. Which ever one that causes the lights to go out when disconnected is the bad switch. The light circuit will work with only one switch connected, so if neccessary you can get by on one switch.
