Recheck your firing order for basics. If this is in good, a compression test may be necessary. Which enigine do you have?

When the "spits and sputters" happen are you in low rpm? Can you "by-pass" the sputtering by accelerating? Has your gas mileage suffered?

The fuel pump does not have enough power to supply fuel, or service your nursle.

you could be running low on fuel pressure due to a plugged filter, do a fuel pressure test

check the distributor

check your idle air control valve and also check to see if your low on antifreeze.

electrical issus. have you ever replaced the spark plugs and wires? distributer cap and rotor? might be time to do this routine maintenence.

Is the check engine light on? If so check what codes are stored. It sounds like the m a p sensor.
