If you're asking whether the transmission and transfer case will work without fluid the answer is NO. If you attempt to use it without the proper fluid/lubricant you will possibly ruin both.

SOURCE: What fluids do I use for my transfer case?

Transfer case, Dexron II or Mercon auto trans fluid, Fill/check level plug above, drain plug lower (both on front face of housing), 20 ft lbs. to tighten, I believe I use a large crescent wrench to remove/install (of course I couldn't use my torque wrench).

1992 jeep wrangler 5 speed 4 cylinder shifts has

won't, not want , right?
the xfr case rear tail shaft is dead.
the 5speed box , must be in gear, is it, did you confirm it , by checking the 5speed, shifter bottom linkage that it really is in gear, did you try all 5 gears?
that be first , then see if the transfer case fails.
same way. same tests.

your post is a contradiction.
if the input to the xfr spins, the output must too, in 2wd mode. (both)
if not the xfr case has issues.
or simple linkage.

2002 envoy trans burned out second 1 just melted

Transfer case fluid is different from the trans fluid, transfer case takes a Blue fluid made by G.M. can't think of the name of it, and trans takes Dex III or IIII read manual, if it is getting to transfer case then you deal between the trans and transfer case is bad causing it to **** the fluid out of trans, need to change the seals this time. Car Quest sells a 1 piece seal that seals both units instead of 2 different seals. Good Luck

What kind of gear oil is required for my 1992 jeep wrangler 5 speed transmission/transfer case and how many quarts will it require

Transmission generally takes a bit less than two quarts, Use 75/90 gear lube in that (in very cold climates you can add a small amount of automatic trans fluid to keep it flowing on cold starts) Transfer case takes a bit over one quart and takes dextron mercon 3. When filling either, fluid is full when on a level surface it begins to come out of the fill hole while filling. When changing either, always make sure you can open the fill plug before draining so you know you can replace what you removed.

4 wheel high will not engage and 2 wheel high will not engage, 4 wheel low makes a popping sound once in while.

when is the last tome you had the fluid changed in the transfer case, this could be the problem.? another problem is a defective transfer case actuator motor.
