Remove gear box and flywheel for starters if the rear seal is in a case then remove that case and fit new seal. If it is a lip seal the remove the old seal and check the crank shaft for a groove. IT is grooved use a "speedie" sleeve ( trade mark name) from a bearing /seal supplier and then fit the new seal using a quality seal fitting tool.

If the rear main seal is the old two piece seal/ felt seal then you will have to virtually remove the crank to do the job properly.

One thing you may want to try especially if you don't have a heated garage is a bottle of Bar's leak rear main sealer. I had a leak big enough to cause my clutch to slip and it worked for me. I figure in the spring I'll replace the seal, maybe.

SOURCE: oil leak out the rear main seal on a 2000 ford explorer

First, the easiest way IS to remove the transmission, it is a one piece seal, if it were a 2 piece, you would need to remove the oil pan and Rear Main Bearing Cap which in my opinion is alot tougher. When installing the new seal, make sure the the end of the crankshaft is clean of debris, lube the seal before sliding it over the end of the crankshaft to ease installation and some like to apply a thin coat of high temp sealant to the outside surface of the new seal to ensure no leakage. When reinstalling the flywheel/flex plate, proper torque is key because you dont want it working loose and having to remove the transmission again.

SOURCE: how do you change a rear main oil seal in a 2000 toyota celica gt

First of all, be certain that the leak is in fact from that seal. many leaks travel to that area.

To change the seal is fairly involved, you need to pull the trans and flywheel. There are some specialzed tools involved. Do you have manual or automatic? Manual requires clutch plate alignment on re assembly, by the way , if manual, be sure to change the release bearing and pilot bearing at minimum. Commonly it would make sense to change the clutch during this process....you're already all the way in there..

Oil leakage on Mercedes Benz 5.0L engines

oil in the bell housing can be rear main seal and it can also be input shaft seal in the gear box if manual. The sump bolts on the rear main cap and will leak next to the bell housing indicating a main seal . If auto then the seal on the converter will leak and the oil will leak out of the bell housing. If you are convinced that it is a main seal then check that there is no crankcase pressure issues to make it leak. Change the engine oil and clean the area and if the oils is clean then that will indicate engine or gear box. Put a white chalk line across any oil paths and watch for it to cross the chalk and change the chalk colour.

My son has been doing something called doughnuts?in his car .so has split the main feeder pipe .i have changed that .but now there is fluid dripping from somewhere behind the engine could this be something...

dougnuts are never a good thing. the front seal on transmission could be leaking,if so the fluid will be red.it will drip down between the engine and transmission. if so, the transmission will need to come out fo r a replacement of front transmission seal. if it's clear fluid,it may be a bad steering rack. if it's black oil, it could be a bad rear main engine seal. if bad rear main seal, that transmission will need to come out for replacement of rear main engine seal.a abd rear main engine seal will also leak down between the engine and transmission and be black oil. check for color of the fluid leaking to give you a starting point to diagnose what to look for. thank you for choosing fixya.com

Front Main Seal is blown on the Transmission

You have to remove the transmission, remove the torque converter to access the seal. Most likely the bushing behind the seal is worn out allowing fluid to leak past the seal. After the trans. is out, take it to a trans. shop. It requires a special tool to change the bushing. Seems like a bunch of work for $10.00 in parts. The rear main seal requires pulling the pan to access it. When the trans. is out, this is the time to replace the rear main seal on the engine.
