Would say its the cam or crank sensor, failing them the coil pack is over heating. hope this helps these the main problems that can do this.

have you tried changing the transmission fluid? a new transmission fluid may ease up the shifting. it really trips when you have a fried transmission fluid.

It is the best auto technician database available today. You can print out specific troubleshooting procedures, diagrams, step-by-step istructions, and soforth. The typical person cannot afford to pay for this service, just automotive dealerships, etc... that is why the public library made it available to everyone and for free to view and print out material. The 1996 civic has a 1.6L b-16 engine. The only difference between the v-tec and non v-tec engine is the dual overhead cam i believe. The 93 civic also should have a b-16 engine in it. The cylinder head should work.......

Before adjusting idle, I'd replace fuel filter and run a good fuel system cleaner through it w/next tank of gas. Note buy brand name fuel and avoid cheap fuel. There's ALOT of questionable fuel going around.
