Question about 2001 Lincoln Town Car

Open Question

Why does my 2001 Lincoln Towncar go into limp mode while throttle is at Wide open. the transmission kicks down into passing gear and the engine revs but the car gains no additional speed

Just changed plugs and boots and it still does it. No check engine light comes on

sounds like tranny computer is bad take it to a grage and have a computer put on it cost about $50.00 to do this

1st when the airbag light is on the system is disabled, so if u have an accident they will not work, as to the common cause read below.
When the airbag light is on it means a fault has occurred in the system and the airbag diagnostic monitor has disabled the system, the most common problem that turns the light on is a break in the connection to the steering wheel mounted airbag, this is due to a rotating ribbon contact that breaks under the steering wheel that connects the airbag to the wiring harness and the diagnostic monitor, the part is called th clock spring contact, a coiled up ribbon electrical contact that turns with the wheel

SOURCE: changing spark plugs on lincoln town car

Remove the spark plug wires, remove the spark plugs,replace them. Do this one cylinder at a time if you never did it. On that year you may need to remove the upper intake to access the plugs on one side. In that case go to a shop. This would not be a novice job.

I had to replace 4 different coils on my '02 LS before it finally stopped misfiring. After one code and coil replaced it would go to the next one. I had to replace them in this order, 2,3,7,8

When # 7 was misfiring it wouldn't even pull a code all of the time, the check engine light would come on one day then go off the next, really strange.

sounds like your switch contacts are shorted closed.. try disconnecting the switch for inspection and use a volt ohm meter to inspect switch across contacts...

By sound of things it you lost your throttle then it seem like car is gone into limp mode. (which is safety mode to prevent damage to vehicle). Any warning light on dash board?

The kick down cable on my 93 s10 blazer 4.3 is broken not even connected to throttle body I'm having alot of drivability and starting problems what would lack of this cable cause


the kick down cable is a mechanical connection that down shifts a transmission when the accelerator is wide open and the road speed is too low
as when going up a steep hill you have the throttle wide open and the vehicle needs to change down gears or the engine will stall
so no cable now down shift when required
run the fault codes as I would not think that the cable is the problem

Kick down


year?
on some years. there is a kick down cable from car throttle
to the A/T transaxle. causing kick down to pass.
there are 2 kickdowns , one is a cable (driver demand) (fell off?)
and load,(load is load on engine) you drive and go up too tall of hill
the PCM sends Load data to the TCM, the TCM sees too much load
and down shifts.
this is all covered in the FSM , read that yet?>
other reasons? sure.
1: ECU in limphome mode,driver ignoring, CEL and DTCS from engine failures.
2: transmission is in limp-home.
3: on even newer cars, with flybywire, ETC can go to limphome.
in limphome. many thing ,just stop working

why not scan the PCM. ? any scan tool or even the $19 one on fleabay/

Not shifting


Any transmission trouble code will put the trans in second gear
and it won\'t shift.
Key on-off-on-off-on without starting the engine will illuminate
the check engine light .It will flash out the codes.Should see a 55
code ,5 flashes,a pause then 5 more. Any codes other than 12 and
55 need recorded for further diagnnosis.
I was thinking that turning the key on and opening the throttle wide
open 4 times within 5 seconds (engine off)clears tranny codes,not sure about that tho. You might try it then drive it and see if it shifts,although
as soon as the malfunction happens again it will go back into limp mode.
Tranny slipping or a slow shift or converter lock up malfunction along
with many other things will trigger this.

It upshifts 1 to 2 to 3 fine? Rev is good? Do you have a check engine light on? Sounds like a bad Throttle position sensor.

I have to push the accelerator almost to the floor to get it to go in to passing gear. Motor feels weak and takes a long time to gain speed. car feels heave but the motor runs very smooth


Actually, this is normal. To 'kick down' the gear in the transmission, you should go WOT or wide open throttle.

4 cylinder motors seem to feel weaker than v-8's and are tuned to the transmission to rev higher to accomplish a certain acceleration point.

My trasmission do not shift properly, my mechanic say the TPS sensor is not working, the TPS could be the reazon?


Yes it is possible for that to be the problem, The transmission needs to know how hard or gently that you are driving the vehicle to know when to shift to another gear, this used to be accomplished by a cable (kick down) from the throttle body or carbuerator to the tranmssion but that job has been repalced by the TPS sensor. Think of when you are on the highway and you have been waitng to pass that slow car for a while you finally get the opportunity so you gun the engine as you change lanes to pass, as you gun the engine the transmission also kicks down into a lower gear to give you more power to complete the pass. Tranny stuck in limp mode


sounds like to prndl switch may be malfunctioning.
gear selector switch, which tells the transmission which gear it is in.

My 1990 towncar hesitates at third gear going 38 mph it first revs then switches into the gear..also it doesnt go into passing gear when i pass a car it wont shift down..


your tranny is going out. VERY common with the 8 cylinders. Have seen it many many times. You should still be able to drive it for a year or so before it goes completely.
When it revs up just let off the gas til the rpm's go down, and then slowly give gas again.
