SOURCE: Trunk does not open with button inside car. Does

Your Valet cancel switch is set.

Open your glovebox and you will see a pushbutton on the the left side, if memory serves. When this button is set, the power button will be disabled, but the key fob button will still work.
This is for when you Valet your car, you push the cancel button in the glovebox, lock the glovebox, then give the Valet your Valet key, which will not open the trunk or the glovebox. Voila, no Valet rummaging through your trunk :)

Often full gloveboxes will be the cause of the button getting pushed accidentally.

SOURCE: the release button inside the car stopped working.

When was the car wrecked? I say that because this lever is hooked up to a thin cable and goes all the way to the back of the car. A technician might have not secured the cable end correctly when the work was done. . Otherwise, the cable *could* go bad on its own, even though this would be pretty rare.

SOURCE: The interior trunk latch button doesn't work

Does your rear seat fold down? If not, it can be removed for access to the trunk, but is a pain to get out. Usually there are bolts attaching the upright part of the seat at the bottom of the upright cushion, where it meets with the seat cushion. After removing those bolts, the upright cushion needs to be pushed up (usually difficult) to disengage 'hooks' at the top to the seat cushion. You can also go to the dealer with proof of ownership, they should be able to cut a key (you need the vin of the car) or possibly a locksmith to make a key. Good luck.

Key will not open trunk or switch under dash

When you push button on dash do you hear trunk actuator. Because neither key nor switch works do this. If you can enter trunk from inside car and use a flashlight look around for a pull lever or a button use it this should open the trunk. When you get open replace trunk latch mechanism

Trunk will not open using the release button inside a 2004 lincoln towncar

Are you hearing the trunk solenoid engage when you press the button? Check for a blown fuse. Have someone listen at the trunk when you press the button. Check the trunk solenoid for a loose wire or it could be a bad trunk solenoid. If the trunk won't open easily with the key, it could be a sticky trunk lock mechanism.

Trunk wont open. latch does not work from inside

Make sure the drivers door is open and push the button on the drivers door to open trunk. Keep the drivers door open while you open trunk. If you close the drivers door before opening it, it won't open. Well this is what happens to our car. Don't know if it's a fault or the design but this does work for us.
