HOW DO I CHANGE SWITCHES ON STEERING WHEEL OF A 06 HUMMER2

No problem on older vehicles even though sometimes the steering wheel would have to be removed along with the steering column shroud, but on vehicles with modern safety devices such as airbags and steering wheel mounted switches the answer is very carefully!

It isn't wise to delve into such work on late models without first referring to a repair manual and following both the safety precautions and the repair schedule.

It is located in the SJB - smart junction box an it is a non- serviceable part . soldered to the board inside . Where do you hear the clicking noise coming from ? The SJB is located behind the left side kick panel .

• Horn switches (part of the steering wheel)
• Clockspring
• Horn relay (part of the smart junction box [SJB])
• Horn

For removal and installation of the steering wheel, refer to Section 211-04 .
For removal and installation of the SJB, refer to Section 419-10 .
Principles of Operation
The smart junction box (SJB) supplies the control and switched voltage to the horn relay (part of the SJB). When the horn switches (part of the steering wheel) are pressed, ground is supplied through the clockspring to the horn relay. The horn relay is then energized directing voltage to the horn and enabling the horn to sound. When the vehicle security system is armed, the SJB provides a momentary ground to the horn relay control side to indicate the system is armed, and an on and off ground when an intrusion is detected or the panic alarm is activated.
If your horns are not working ,you have a wiring problem or the clock spring is open . If the relay is bad the whole SJB has to be replace an the dealer would have to do that . Needs to be programmed ,with factory tool .

you can buy the switch from the dealer and they change very easy

this is something that would be best done by the dealer due to the airbag being in the steering wheel , that being said if you wish to attack this on your own still you have to unplug any power [battery, back up battery, stereo amps stiffening capacitors etc] then there are some small screws on the back of the steering wheel that need to come out before the horn/airbag assembly will come out to allow you to disconnect and replace the steering wheel switches depending on the accessories on your truck you may also need to remove the steering column covers before you can acess the scews in the back of the steeringwheel. be VERY cautious of the airbag connectors and wires but you would still be safer and better off letting a dealer change those out for you.

You have to reset the oil change minder feature. It is done through your instrument cluster. If you have switches on the steering wheel i.e info, menu etc. scroll through until you find oil change reset and follow the prompts. If there are no info switches on the steering wheel the same process is accomplished by using the trip minder reset button on the instrument cluster.

One cause could be if the steering wheel is cleaned with any liquid or treated with something like Armorall this could get down into the switches that control the radio and cause this condition.

The switch has to be replaced, the bulbs are not serviced seperately. On some of the vehicles, you could pull the the switch out far enough to access the connector and change it from the front, but be careful, if there is not enough slack in the harness, the steering wheel has to come off, along with the rear cover on the wheel, to get enough slack in the harness to remove the switches. This was a design change around 2004 or 2005.
