Tie rods aren't that difficult. Raise the front, remove the tires. There is a big nut on the back end of the tie rod, break it loose, don't spin it any further. The tie rod has a nut to remove at the spindle. To get the tie rod out of the spindle, use a fairly large hammer and smack the spindle where the tie rod goes into it. The tie rod will pop out eventually. Unscrew to old tie rod and screw on the new one, up to the nut, then back it off a bit to go into the spindle.Tighten the tie rod to the spindle first, then tighten the back nut to the tie rod. If nothing has been messed with before, then the alignment should be pretty darn close. If it has been adjusted because of loose tie rods, then yes, you will need an alignment.
Special tools are necessary to replace tie rod ends. After the tie rod ends are replaced, it is mandatory to have an alignment done.
