You have a positive wire touching ground.

If you have a relay to the starter solenoid then red one from the battery then red from the relay to the starter solenoid. The starter solenoid earth wire goes into the starter housing for the brushes if not then the red wire from the battery goes direct to the starter solenoid big terminal. The other big terminal will already got inside the housing. That takes care of the really heavy wires . The small wire goes to the little terminal between the big terminals.

hot wire starter you can short out ignition switch and wiring. to jump starter ignition switch start postion.you have to run 10 gauge jumper wire from the starter solenoid positive battery terminal to starter switch or S terminal on starter solenoid this procedure take two people but better remove starter replace starter solenoid. trying jumping off starter on camaro would be dangerous you have jack up car to get to starter and wiring person laying under car hot wiring starter while other person hold ignition start position put person under car in deadly position just remove starter have auto parts check it out first replace starter or solenoid if either bad. easier hot wire starter if starter under hood like my 1977 vega monza had starter at top could take long screw driver jump starter off.on the four cylinders engines back in the 70s. camaro starter under car dangerous trying to hot wire not a good idea.

LOOKING AT STARTER WIRES.BATTERY CABLE POSITIVE CABLE GOES TO STARTER SOLENOID POSITIVE POST TERMINAL THAT IS THE LARGE STUD IN THE STARTER SOLENOID.. THE OTHER TWO RED WIRES WITH LARGE RING TERMINALS ALSO GOES TO THE STARTER SOLENOID POSITIVE POST TERMINAL.THE PURPLE WIRE WITH SMALL RING TERMINAL GOES TO S OR SWITCH POST TERMINAL.ON STARTER SOLENOID LOOK AT THE STARTER SOLENOID YOU WILL SEE LETTERS R AND S ON SOLENOID THE PURPLE WIRES WITH SMALL RING TERMINAL GOES TO S STUD TERMINAL ON STARTER SOLENOID.

STARTER HAS 3 WIRES BIG HEAVY RED CABLE IS THE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE TO STARTER SOLENOID.THE SMALL RED 10 GAUGE WIRE ON STARTER SOLENOID ASLO IS THE FUSE LINK WIRE TO STARTER AND ALTERNATOR.SMALL 10 PURPLE WIRE GOES TO STARTER SOLENOID S TERMINAL MEANING SWITCH.

Check the wires at the starter, and inspect the wires at the starter solenoid for any damage or missing wire insulation allowing the wires to make contact with each other or ground, and check the wire to the "S" terminal on the starter solenoid to be sure that it is not touching the main battery cable at the "Bat" or main terminal on the starter solenoid.

If there is no problem with the wires to the starter solenoid, especially the wire to the "S" terminal on the starter solenoid, and there is no after-market alarm installed with a starter enable, then the problem will be with the ignition switch.

sounds like you are hooking up the starter wrong. the positive goes to the starter main terminal from the battery. the ignition wire goes to the s on the solenoid, which activates 12 volts when the ignition switch is turned on which causes a magnetic field
inside the solenoid and joins the connectors
in the solenoid to the main positive wire from the
battery to the main starter unit brushes/armature inside the starter unit. If you have a constant
12 volts from the ignition wire it will keep the solenoid engaged. If you put the main positive wire on the wrong solenoid terminal it will immediately engage the starter. try putting the main battery wire to the correct terminal or perhaps check the ignition wire for a short or constant voltage to the solenoid.

so did this problem just happen or did you do some wiring repairs??. on a 1977 the only solenoid should be the fender. I dont have a wiring diagram that old. if it just happened there is a small wire on the solenoid on the fender, unhook this wire, and see if it happens again. if the starter does not engage then you may have a ign switch problem, if it still engages then the solenoid is bad.
