SOURCE: There is a thumping sound coming from the rear end of my '06 Grand Prix. It isn't a constant thump and sometimes it happens when I apply the brakes

The thumping Would likely be warped rotors causing the pads to rock in the carrier, (Assuming the anti rattle clips were installed at the time brakes were replaced?) Turn or replace rear rotors

Light thumping sound when turning, could this be brakes

Could be universal joints, struts, or wheel bearings too! Get underneath your car, put your front end on Jack-Stands for safety, and grab hold of the tie-rods and check for movement up and down. If they seem tight, do the same with your front struts... it's movement your looking for. Spin the front wheels with the wheel covers off and listen for noise. They should spin freely. Brakes usually make a scraping sound... metal to metal. Any thumping when you brake hard... like a panic stop is normal. The ABS brakes are supposed to do this.

2005 cadillac front end thumping noise

That's a tough one since there can be so many different causes, starting with something loose under the hood to a problem with the suspension (sway bar links, control arm bushing, ball joint, strut mount, motor mount, etc etc). This can be a serious safety issue, so if it were my vehicle, I would first get to a dealer or alignment shop right away to have the front end suspension, tires and wheels checked.

Hello. I hear a very loud thumping noise from the back of my 2014 Toyota Corolla as I slow down. I have taken it twice to the service station at the dealer and they hear the noise but cannot identify where...

Here are the only reason that can cause a thumping noise
  1. Wheel and Tire Problems
    • Wheels can become bent from striking objects, and tires can develop bulges from broken belts or wear. Both problems may cause a thumping noise. Thumping sounds caused by wheel and tire problems will typically increase in frequency at higher speeds, though the sound may not be heard at lower speeds. These problems can often be spotted by visual inspection.
    Suspension Problems
    • Worn or broken struts or strut mounts can create a thumping noise, especially when the vehicle hits a bump in the roadway. To test struts, bounce the rear of the car by forcefully pushing down on it and letting go. After letting go, the car should settle back to its original position without bouncing or noise.
    Loose Trim
    • Loose trim pieces near or in the wheel well can flutter in the wind while a car is being driven. These trim pieces may create a thumping noise as they strike other objects. A car owner can check trim pieces for looseness to determine if that is the source of the noise.
Hope this helps

Rearend alignment

Some of the rear independent suspension models will flex depending on the weight inside the car. I have seen others which will tow in after being lifted off the ground. These will reset after a little driving.

The front-wheel drive Models can have shims in the rear suspension and can require Alignment at each end of the car. You would ask for a 4 wheel alignment, not to be confused with 4 wheel drive.

There are bushings in some of the pivots for the rear suspension and the rear struts can come with springs that can become weak. Either can give you excess toe-in.

Start with having your car's Alignment checked. They can tell you about worn parts. Or try to determine if there is play in the rear bushings.

My ford focus 2003 has a sound in the front wheel pasenger side like this: thump, thump, thump. I install new tie rod end, inner tide rod, new tires, front and rear end alignment. ?whaat is the proble

have someone drive it while you listen from outside the car. this could be achieved in a parking lot. it could be an inner fender touching your tire when you get up to speed due to air hitting it.

The rear driver side wheel is leaning inwards how do i fix it.

You did not indicate which Model vehicle this is. In general, a car with front-wheel drive has rear wheels which are Independent of each other. This means there is no solid axle going from one side of the car to the other.

The Independent rear wheel is mounted to a strut. The strut assembly is adjustable and gets an Alignment just like the front-end parts do. It must be put on an Alignment machine. Another area which can tilt a rear wheel is a severely worn spindle or wheel bearing.

This would mean the rear strut may be properly in place, but the spindle and bearing inside the rear brake drum or rotor has too much play and is allowing the wheel to tilt. You would hear a loud grinding noise if the bearing is bad.

I do not want you to ignore getting your car checked, but a complete answer includes vehicles which have the rear wheel construction built to allow for the rear wheels to flex in and out depending on terrain and load. These would be the cars where if you jacked them up, the rear wheels would not come down straight. It takes a few miles before the parts level out.

You should take the weight off the one wheel and see if there is play anywhere. The struts can be shimmed and the shims may have fallen out. You may have a rusted strut tower. Once you assure yourself the car is safe to drive for Alignment, thats the next step.

Thanks for using Fixya. I hope my solution is very helpful to you.

2000 DODGE NEON DRIVER SIDE WHEEL THUMPS ?

Coould be your ball joint. One way to check to see if it is the bearings is to jack the car and grab hold of the tire and give it a twisting motion, one hand on the top of the tire and one hand at the bottom...push/pull type method. You should have almost no play in it whatsoever. Inspect your ball joints. Look for torn boots....means no grease.

If you replaced only one strut, it would be advisable to take the car in for a front end alignment.

Let us know what you find.

Rear strut almost rubs tire

This sounds like either a wheel bearing a bent axle or an alignment problem, the alignment shop will check all these before they do anthing with the alignment.
