No tailights and not the fuse
If you have no lights period I would check the wiring. If it's not the fuses (Under hood and inside). Just the brake lights check the brake switch under brake pedal.
Some Nissan's have a unit between the wiring that goes out. Trace the wires from the tail lights It would be in the trunk. Small black box.
Also check Maxima.org someone on there has the answer. ;Good luck.

First check your brake fluid. It may be low. If its low, have your brakes checked, they may be worn out and you may need brakes. If the master cylinder is tottaly empty, than you may have a leak. Here is a quick test for the E-brake switch. Look at the "brake light" while its on and pul on the e-brake while you are holding the release button in the handle. Pump the e-brake lever repeadetly and observe the "brake light" if it gets brighter and dimmes as you are pumping the e-brake lever., than the swithc is OK and you have a low brake fluid level. Hope this helps. let me know what you find.

bacon79: inside the car, in front of your left knee in the fuse block you are interested in looking at.
Remove the cover. You will see 3 rows of "ATO" type fuses arranged in a vertical fashion.
Often they will put a number to the right of the fuse.
In your specific case, you are interested in the center row of fuses.
Look at the top fuse which should be a 7.5 amp and the number next to it should be "26". Anyway, if you remove this fuse and look through it, it will either be burned through the center, have a hairline crack, or be solid. If it is the later and the dome light doesn't work, let me know and I'll see if I can help you.
SOURCE: How to program 1997 Maxima remote
Try this it works for the 95 and 96 models it should also work for all models 95 thru 99. 1st you need to get in the car and hit the lock button on the drivers door switch. Make sure doors and windows are all shut. To program the remote you must insert the key into the ignition 6 to 8 times rapidly in a 10 second time period and when you have done it correct the hazards lights will then illuminate twice. Next then you must hit the lock button quickly on the remote due to a slight time delay only hit the button once. Keep repeating this step until it works and to find out if it worked hold down the trunk button or the unlock button(the front windows should let down on you Mad-Max.
