You may need to take your car to a shop and have them pressure test engine for a possible head gasket leak. The head gasket may be blown by an exhaust port and is going out the exhaust and that would be why you see nothing on the ground. You can check to see if the water may be getting into the oil by checking the dipstick. If the oil is milky creamy in color then the water is leaking by water jacket again it will be a blown head gasket. Good luck and I hope this helps.

Many possible causes. Leak can be when you drive, but not show on your driveway. The heater could be leaking into the passenger area, though you'd likely smell the "maple syrup" smell of anti-freeze.

It's also possible that you have a head gasket leak into the coolant, causing the overheating, and blowing some of your coolant out. Get a compression test on the cooling system, and a compression check on the cylinders.

SOURCE: The anit-freez is leaking from the front passengre side.

that sounds definately like a water pump, without a doubt.
---Rinse all the coolant off the engine and radiator. After letting everything dry thoroughly, start the engine with the hood up, and watch for leaks. With this much coolant leaking you should easily find the leak.

Could be a heater hose, or lower rad. hose. If not I would dye test it. Autozone has a loaner kit. Contains fluro dye and a blacklight. Makes it very easy to track it to the source.

---------------------- a person having a same problem like your solved the problem .and what it was is as follows ------ I have a 96 DeVille and it had the same problem. What turned out to be wrong was that my car has 2 fans, 1 should come on when start the car and the second comes on when the engine is under a heavy load (ex. stop & go traffic, a/c running on a very hot day). My primary fan wasn't working properly and I had to take to the shop to correct the problem.
------------- Unfortunately the two previous answers will not cause the coolant to spew out when you shut the engine off. The only thing that will cause that is excess pressure in the cooling system. Just about the only thing that will cause that is a head gasket. Most Cadillacs from the early 80s on have aluminum heads. It is very commom for an aluminum head to become warped when the engine overheats. When this happens a crack can form between the head gasket and the top of the cylinder block allowing pressure to get into the coolant. This in turn may cause a coolant hose to expand and allow coolant to spew out, it can also cause the radiator cap to release coolant, a good radiator cap is designed to release pressure when the pressure goes above the designated psi. The fact that it is not boiling over while running indicates that most if not all the rest of the cooling system is allowing the water to flow. The most common cause of overheating in engines is that the thermostat gets old and sticks. It only has to stick one time to cause the engine to over heat enough to either damage the head gasket or even cause a crack in the cylinder head. Take the vehicle to a garage and have them do a pressure check on the cooling system. After they have applied pressure to the system they will allow the engine to cool for a short while. If the pressure drops very much they should then remove each spark plug in turn and check the cylinders to see if coolant is in in them. If so that is the evidence that the head gasket is bad. If there is coolant in the crank case oil pan also, that indicates that either the head gasket is completely gone or that the cylinder head is craked. Depending on your goegraphical location it could cost around $1000.00 or more per head to have the heads milled and the head gasket replaced. If the car is over 8 years old or has more than 100k miles on it you will be better off to have the water pump, timing chain, camshaft and crankshaft timing gears replaced at the same time. Depending on the cost of such you may wish to check with someplace such as Dr. Motorworx to have the entire engine replaced. It can sometimes cost less to do that. And these shops usually not only garrunty their work, but usually give anywhere from 1 to 3 years or 36k warrunty on the engine. I hope this has been some help to you. GOD Bless! GLORIFY GOD!------------also this is someones personal experience.

SOURCE: How do I put in freeze out plug?

The easy solution is to get a rubber expasion plug to replace the original brass plug.

SOURCE: anti freeze leeking

I have seen a couple of these now with headgasket leaks to the outside of the block just as you describe. I solved them both with a stop-leak additive, not something I would normally use, but I really didn't want to pull the heads because the exhaust studs always break on these engines. I would find out for sure where the leak is before proceeding though. If it's a hose or frost plug, you'll have to repair it properly.

SOURCE: My 1997 Nissan Maxima 4 door sedan is leaking

could be the water pump. where is the coolant coming from?? behind the a/c compresor?? if so, you need a new water pump. need to know location of the leak or at least general location if you can not get exact.

How to air bleed radiator from 2007 cadillac cts 3.6 six cylinder base

Start by putting approximately 3/4 of the anti-freeze in slowly. Use pre-mix or you will need to make sure you add in a 50/50 ratio. Once to that point let it sit for awhile and then start it, let the motor idle, turn on the heater to HOT, watch the level in the radiator as it will expand when warm. Gradually add the rest of the anti-freeze to top to the bottom of the radiator cap and then replace the cap. Now add the anti-freeze into the Burp/overflow tank to the cold level. Let the car warm completely and drive it around the block. Let the car cool completely and then check for the level in the burp/overflow tank. If low add to the cold line. I would then check for the next few times you drive and if it stays at the cold line when it has sat overnight you should be fine.

Thermostat, put a new one in and have heat, go 15 miles up the road and it cools off. shut car off for 10 min. and it is hot again but windows are fogging up..

Does the engine reach normal operating temp? Do you live in an extremely cold region? Are the heater hoses hot? Also, there could be a problem with temp door, under the dash.

The heater will not blow hot air unless you are giving it gas

Welcome to FIxYa.com

This is a classic symptom of low coolant level or air in the system. Too, clogged heater core.

Buy a 5 min flush from your local dealer. With a gallon of Anti freeze and water pump lube. Flush the system per instructions on the back of the 5 min flush bottle. And add the one gallon of anti-freeze to system. The top off with water. Make sure engine is running with the heat selector on and fan on high.

See if the will work if not Change thermostat.

93 acura legend doesnt run hot for a few days after i add coolant, then it starts to run hot, its low on coolant, i smell coolant sometimes, but i never see it on the ground, no water in the oil, or steam...

Could be water pump yes. Look where the water pump shaft is and see right behind where the shaft enters the pump and see if you see a small hole on either side of the pump. See if there is any anti-freeze coming out of the that hole or anywhere around the water pump housing. If you see anti-freeze coming out then the pump is probably bad and needs to be changed. You could also be loosing it from the heater core although most of the time you will notice a substance on your inner side of windshield that when you try and clean it only smears. Looks like a film on the windshield inside of the car. You will also smell anti-freeze pretty strongly inside of the car especially when you use your heater.

My 2003 nissan frontier 4x4 overheats when the AC is on and I am move at a slow pace. Why?

I had the same problem one hot day waiting in a McDonald's drive-thru but it never occurred again since I changed the anti-freeze. Some say it is just caused by air in the system and changing the anti-freeze may have coincidentally (but maybe temporarily) cured the problem. That was 2 years ago and I may have problems this summer. It doesn't seem right to need a new radiator on a product this new - maybe when the other guy changed his he got rid of his air and that fixed it.
