Possible causes
- Faulty front heated oxygen sensor
- Ignition misfiring
- Faulty fuel injectors
- Exhaust gas leaks
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
My bet would be dirty fuel injectors, Try putting fuel injector cleaner in your tank next time you fill up.

SOURCE: 2001 Pontiac Sunfire Fuel Problem

Are you certain that the engine is getting fuel? If not, then you will have to verify that there isn't any blockage in the fuel system to prevent the fuel from reaching the engine. If fuel is reaching the engine, try the following
1. Check compression values for each cylinder.

2. Inspect electrical circuitry in the distributor assembly (slack wires, broken wires, dmaged rotor etc)

3. Check to see if the timing belt was not severed. This belt transmits the drive from the crankshaft to the camshaft. If the belt ius severed, the camshaft cannot rotate in order to open the valves

SOURCE: getting a code P0440 on my 2002 pontiac sunfire.

the reason there is a P0440 = lare leak evap sytem. this can be caused be several things like a vent valve. which need to be close to check for leaks and if that stuck open this will set a p0440. or there is another problem. but i would start with a vent valve. there is a way to test it but you need a scan tool to do this. this is a common problem. 2734 GM Tech.

"I have a 1996 pontiac sunfire that will start up idle rough then dies. If I hit the gas pedal it wants to bog down. What can the problem be"

Check for trouble codes, check the fuel pressure. Autozone and others will scan for trouble codes for free, they also rent or loan fuel pressure gauge testers.

Most likely, your Idle Air Controller (also known as Idle Air Bypass) is sticky or simply malfunctioning. Your Throttle Position Sensor may also be defective.

Was driving down son's dirt road driveway returning home at low speed in 2nd gear in my 1997 sunfire when it suddenly started running rough with no power. it will start right up and idle is rough but...

Sure sounds like a typical case of dirty/contaminated fuel....or a broken vacumn supply hose around the intake manifold area, in neutral let it idl;e and look and listen for a hissing sound, or a broken black rubber hose.
Also have the computer scanned for any possible codes.
Another thing to look at is the catalyctic converter, put a vac. gauge on the engine and see if the vac drops to almost zero...indicating a plugged cat.
