I have changed both transmission mounts, changed filter & fluid. Van is front wheel drive only. I was wondering if something could be binding and putting some pressure on the drive axel. While the van is completely raised and without the wheels the reverse works find. With it raised with wheels on it the reverse gets a little sluggish and once its down & back to normal you can hear the reverse engage and hesitates but that's all happens. One place told that I needed a complete rebuild and another told to change the mounts. Just don't understand if the transmission is bad why does the reverse still work when completely raised off the ground without the wheels?

Hello,
I also was concerned about my tranny in my 1998 dodge caravan. I replaced the fluid & filter and it worked for a while. I finally had to bring it to AAMCO Transmission and they gave me a free evaluation of it & an estimate for the job. I had the option of ignoring their evaluation results and bring it home or just bite the bullet and have it repaired. I thought I could get a lot more miles out of it so I had it fixed for $1400 with no regrets.
Perhaps if you can find a similar place with free evaluation & estimate then that would be the thing to do as you seemed to have covered all the other bases.
Good Luck!

i would try somthing simple first. sound like the tranny filter is cloged and it is taking awile for the fluid to get to the gears. change the fluid, filter and gasket first as would any other shop. easy to do also.

yes it has and you need to change it before the wheel flips on you

It does not seem that sufficient diagnosis was done. No, you cant give a specific diagnosis like that without tearing unit down. It's likely that they told you the most common failure and left it at that. Likely there is a problem with your unit...I think this becomes more of a trust issue than a mechanical one. A second opinion from an independent reputable shop may help but either way, you need to have it fixed. In not using it much, it makes me wonder how it got worn.
good luck

Check wheel bering for play if there is no play , it doesn't mean that bearing is NOT bad its can still be dry and would be making that grinding sound you described Also check axle and see if boot is broken. That may be your problem also make sure that rotors are not gouged/scraped up and pads are good.Contact if you need more help and thanks for using FIX YA
