The reverse bands can break without leaving a burning smell. The instant you put it in reverse, there is a sudden torque as the slack comes out of the drive train, so when it comes tight it can break without slipping or any other warning.

SOURCE: 1999 isuzu rodeo

i have same problem. get ready to pay around 2400+. as a matter of fact mine is in the shop right now. you cannot check the fluid yourself. it's up under the bottom. no dip-stick. its a joke, i have a 99 rodeo. will drive it long enough to get my 2400 out of it and then its a gonner !!!! sounds like it is going to create alot of problems if i keep it.

No reverse

Hello Gerald,

Are we talking about an automatic or standard transmission?

If you have an automatic check the transmission fluid level (Owners manual should provide some details for check the transmission fluid level)

If the fluid level is okay check for a burnt odor (not good). If the fluid level is low follow your manuals instructions on bringing it up to the correct level...although I have to say it is usual to have a leak without noticing some fluid under where you normally park your vehicle via a transmission pan gasket failure.

Does your vehicle provide forward motion when put into gear?
If it does I'm afraid your off to the transmission shop.

Driving up hill in my 1994 Oldsmobile 98, my transmission suddenly stopped moving forward. reverse in my car still works just fine, what should I check?

First check the selector rod or cable to be sure it selects the right gear.
Check fluid level as well. The planetery gears may be shot!

I WAS PLOWING SNOW TODAY WITH MY 1990 F250 7.3 DIESEL AND THE TRANSMISSION QUIT WONT MOVE FOREWARD OR REVERSE WILL MOVE SOME AT 4000 RPM. LOTS OF FLUID NO BURNT SMELL IN THE FLUID

Only thing reverse and forward have in common are torque converter splines and pump. Is the fluid level high? This could mean pump and or converter has failed.

Transmission problem; goes into reverse but doesn't go into.....

Thats tells me you prob need a new tranny, but first thing is run the car in N with the ebrake on, and check your tranny fluid. If its low add some, and also smell it to see if it smells burnt. A burnt smell indicated the tranny has overheated at some time, and heat is your trannys worst enemy... Good Luck

Transmission only goes in reverse

make sure check transmission for proper fluid level and color.if fluid looks black or smell burnt.change fluid and filter.check manual linkage for proper adjustment.if all is good.your transmission oil pump bad or the over drive unit has damage roller clutch.or the forward clutch has burned clutch plates and damage pistons and seals.you probably need to buy another transmission or get an overhaul.

No forward movement but reverse works fine. Help?

More than likely the forward clutches are burnt, causing the no forward movement problem.Remove the transmission dipstick and smell the fluid,if it smells like burnt coffee then you need the transmission rebuilt.

My truck turns on but does not move forward

Make sure your transmission fluid is up to level, if it is, put a little bit on your fingers from the dipstick, does it smell burnt? if your unsure rub it between your fingers if it looks more black than red and feels gritty its burnt, try changing fluid and filter if that doesnt help your forward clutches are out, ive had some luck with trans-X in situations like this but its rare that it helps and almost never lasts hope i could help
