You will need a spring compressor to compress the spring while changing the shocker/strut,

SOURCE: need to replace front struts

A "normal" coil spring compressor won't usually work on struts. A strut compressor works from both ends of the assembly. You can remove the entire strut and spring without removing the spring, then you place it into the compressor, increase tension just a bit and remove the top bearing and mount plate , relieve the tension, remove the strut and reverse the procedure to re-assemble it.

Replace struts
Unless you are familiar with mcpherson struts, it would be wise to have a shop replace them for you. You would have to bring the vehicle to a shop after replacing the struts anyway because the wheel alignment would have to be checked. If you don't check it, you will kick yourself when your front tires wear faster, your steering wheel isn't straight, or the car pulls to one side. Besides those reasons, if you remove the center shaft nut without the proper spring compressing tools mounted, the spring will shoot out of control, possibly causing major damage and physical injury.

WELL IT REALLY EASY I THINK THERE IS ONLY A TOTAL 3 OR 4 BOLTS AT MAX TO REMOVE THEM ..HOWEVER YOU DO NEED A SPRING COMPRESSOR TO COMPRESS THE COIL SPRING ..OTHER WISE IT COULD SHOOT OFF AND SERIOUSLY HURT YOU ..REMOVE THE TWO NUTS FROM AROUND THE UPPER STRUT MOUNT ONE BOLT AT THE BOTTOM PULL IT OUT..THAT'S IT

Raise the car and remove the wheels. Loosen the bolts holding the strut to the steering knuckle. Before removing them, remove the strut mount bolts under the hood. Then remove the other bolts, the entire strut assembly will slide out. You can either install a complete new strut and spring assembly (more expensive), or you can use a coil spring compressor to remove the spring from the old strut and install it on a new one (less expensive but you must have access to a spring compressor). Make sure when installing the spring that it is aligned correctly on the new strut. A compressed spring is very dangerous, be sure to follow the instructions with the spring compressor. Re-install the strut assembly. Make sure that the knuckle bolts are torqued to spec.

Make sure you get a spring compressor and I reccomend replacing both struts, dust boots, mounts and bearings. Usualyl due to age the mount/bearing will cause noise/steering issuse and the dust boots are there to help the struts last longer by not letting water/dirt ruin the strut seals

Coil spring
If your car has over 75K miles on and the struts are original, I'd have the struts replaced. As for the coil spring, you can probably find a repair manual at your local library. You can get loaner spring and strut compressor tools at most auto parts stores (loaners are free, just have to leave a deposit for the price of the tool).

Repair cost will vary from place to place, but I'd say coil and strut replacement is about 4-5 hours labor. I'd guess a $300-$450 for parts and labor (coil - $100, pair struts - $140)

Front struts replacement
Jack up and secure front end of your vehicle,Take off two front wheels. Loosen to bolt on the bottom of struts (Its a bolt and nut). Remove clip that holds brake hose on to strut and remove hose. DO NOT OPEN BRAKE LINE OR DISCONNECT FROM CALIPER. Remove bolts and remove bottom of strut from knuckle/Hub assembly. Then loosen nuts on strut tower( on top of fender inside hood) (3) nuts, mark exact locations of each nut on strut mount area on upper fender weld. Make sure to hold strut on the bottom so it doesn't drop down on caliper and knuckle or on you possibly.YOU WILL NEED A SPRING COMPRESSOR to compress spring so you can take struts off. MAKE SURE THAT SPRING IN COMPRESSED/SQUEEZED WITH A STRUT COMPRESSOR. Then loose center nut on strut tower(may be covered with a circular rubber cover) If nut spin around with out getting loose use vise grips to hold strut rod ONLY TO REMOVE STRUT NOT TO INSTALL. if you use vise grips to install it will damage strut. When nut is off, remove strut and reinstall new one transfer all rubber boots and cushions from old strut. Good Luck thanks for using FIX-YA.com contact me if you need more help.
