Why do my high/low beam life Why are my headlights not working on low/high beam when I turn my light switch on in my 1996 ford ranger truck? I have to pull my switch on the steering column that controls my high/low beam towards me in order for my headlights to work at all? What's wrong with my headlights?
Switch has gone bad if the only lights you have are when pulling back to flash to pass position .
Sounds like the low beam on your bulbs have burned out. Since you don't use the high beams that often they usually don't go first, which is why they are still functioning. Pull one of the bulbs out and check the filament on the bulb. You should be able to see if the filament is broken. If that's the case pull the other bulb and check that one then simply replace them. If it's not the bulbs then I would pull the fuse for the head lights. If that isn't the issue then its probably the switch that has failed. Start with the bulbs, that the easiest and simplest to fix.
Hope this helps, good luck.
SOURCE: 1996 ford ranger headlights not working
I had the same problem 1998 ford ranger. left headlight very dim. right head light worked normal. pull back for high beam flash left dim headlight would go out. put on high beems left light got even more dim. trouble shot wires and replaced blinker/high low beam/whiper unit didn't fix. replaced headlight didn't fix. looked at wireing harnes connecter that conects to headlight bulb and center (black Wire) female contacts was open more than the others. (was making weak contact (ground)
FIX:::: SLIGHTLY BENT BLADE ON HEADLIGHT TO MAKE BETTER CONTACT WITH WIRE CONECTION WITH WIDER FEMALE CONTACT RECPTICAL. HEADLIGHTS BRIGHT AS EVER AGAIN. PS ALSO PUT DIELECTRIC GREASE IN CONTACTOR.
HOPE THIS HELPS
