Question about 1997 Jaguar XK8
Car appears to be running fine

If it starts and drives but you keep getting "Cruise Control Disabled" and "Check Brake Lights" messages, it is very likely the Brake/Cruise Control Switch mounted under the dash and operated by the brake pedal. Common failure on these cars. Good write-up with pictures on replacing it on JaguarFoums.com. Good luck.

Doesn't matter how it runs to you

I have the same problem with the Cruise Control not available coming up but I had a smiliar problem with the ABS and Engine light coming on when battery was pretty much dead, it was hard to steer and brake.. may be something different with your car..

you need to have your obd3 Diagnostic Trouble Codes read Most auto parts stores will do this for you. This will give you a better idea where to start.

You most likely have a vacuum leak. This is a common problem. The easiest leak areas are break booster, PCV hose and IMT seals. The more complex are the upper and lower intake manifold seals. These are still fairly simple to replace. I replaced my upper seals and still had a problem so I replaced lower seals and that corrected it. I forgot to reinstall the fuel rail sensor so I had to take it apart a third time. I can now do it in under 20 min. You might want to change your plugs while you have the intake manifold off.

The only thing that will cause a cruise control fault is a loose vacuum hose ussually on the breather hose coming from the valve cover in front to the throttle body. As for the remainder, shut off the car and restart to get you home and avoid the limp home mode. That in itself is an electronic fault in the ground system. Check you coils or replace them with a new set of plugs (autolite double platinum recommendes.) Clean any grounds you may have and then start you engine. You will notice there is no problem then. Run a diagnostic tool to see if there is any fault with grounded sensors like the O2 to keep that from happening again. Don't get the tranny replaced cause thats all the dealership wants to do and charge you $5k. Its not the actual cause. Good luck and let us know if there is anything else we can do here at fixya.
