SOURCE: snapped alternator belt
if its a similar engine to the standard vw's then you can bend the spring loaded tensioner right behind the alternator with a spaneer (shifting spanner works well) and it loosens the belt.

check your fuel filters vif these are ok i would recomend the glow plugs be checked along with the fuel pump

Had the same problem with my 1.4 litre. Cleaned the throttle body thoroughly with a toothbrush. It was OK for a couple of month, then it was the same problem again. I then drilled a ~4 mm hole in the butterfly. No problems after that, and that was about 4 years ago.
