A meter will show a charge from an alternator but what charge was it . IF it is not 14.5 volts and DC volts not ac volts then the alternator is not working properly and that is why the light is staying on. Best have the electrics checked out at an accredited auto electrician shop.

SOURCE: Charging Light On After Replacing Alternator/Battery1999Windstar

Hi, I can't tell you exactly what is wrong because there is too much involved at this point, what with 2 shops working with it, but I can give you some advise on what else to check. On the alternators and the wiring that supports them a small volt charge is taken off one of the slip rings, where the brushes ride, for the purpose of turning out the light. As I remember, this is a yellow wire that runs back to the dash.

To the alternator, it would be one of the wires that plug into the side of the alternator case.

Probably a defect lambdasonde or inlet pressure sensor (MAP sensor) it will show many different errors on the test readout ex: inlet manifold pressure, knock sensor, lambda value wrong, idle speed out of range, etc.
read out the faults, after delete the readout, then drive one day, read faults out again , compare the results, and change the components from test

What is year--make--model of vehicle? I'd check alternator connections to and from alternator. Check battery and battery connections. Check for charging system trouble codes, see if any?

Battery draining peugeot 406

Has the alternator been tested?
You will need a multimeter set to DC volts to do this test. (See image below).
Open the bonnet to get access to the battery. With the engine OFF, put the red meter probe on the positive (+) battery terminal and the black probe onto the negative (-) battery terminal.
A fully charged battery will give 12.6v. If it drops below 9v the battery is not charged enough to work properly.
Lift the multimeter clear of the engine and start the car. Keeping clear of any moving parts repeat the above test. The reading should rise to between 13.8v and 14.2v. If the reading is lower, or higher, the alternator is likely to be faulty. Get a good auto electrician to test the system if your not sure.

Low battery....you can damage your ecu if you continue to use it. Open the bonnet and charge the battery with a external charger and after charging battery check the alternator whether its charging the battery.

My battery light flashes and then my tc light is on with what looks like a wrench beside it pontiac montana

Sounds like a bad alternator. GM vehicles are notorious for failing starters, alternators and fuel pumps. If your battery light is flashing, your alternator is not putting out enough keep the battery charges and keep all of those electronics running. take a volt meter. You should get anywhere from 13.8 to 14.8 volts with your engine running and about 12 volts with everything off. Take the vehicle to your local auto parts store for a free charging system test. Advance auto parts can load test the battery and charging system.

check charge of battery......put a volt meter across it ,,,should be above 12.3 volts.
2.check to see if alternator is working correctly........put 1 probe on the of alternator and the other probe to the body of the alternator....the reading should be 14v with the car engine running .if not then your alternator needs replacing.
3.with the car running probe your battery...should be reading above 14v.....this means alternator is working .
4.personally i think your battery is not holdng its charge,i would renew it,they cost

The ign lights do not come up when the key is turned just the h/brake and abs light the battery seems not to be charging and the car dies when the batt is dead model 200te estate H reg

This sounds like the output regulator on the alternator! if the car has electronic ignition, this works under load from the engine! if the alternator is not working the the electronic ignition will run off the battery.... thus draining it and the engine will stop! can you test he alternator using a test meter, this should throw out approx' 14-15volts under load! if this is dropping or does not register a voltage then the alternator is at fault! replace and charge battery! hey presto.
hope this helps
Kind regards

may i suggest you test the charge to battery using volt meter should be around 14 volts if alt is working ok also check the wires and connections to alternator are clean and secure? if alternator is faulty it is reasonably eay diy to change and you can obtain yourself from motor store if you have local tyre/battery depot near you pop along and have them check alt output/condition if you have no v/meter? they normally do not charge here in uk for quick check if they are not busy hope this helps

Check the alternator belt for proper tension. Also check alternator voltage output. If output is low the rest of the systems can fail.
