The ability to release the shifter from the Park position depends on the brake switch. You have to put your foot on the brake to take it out of park. You may have an problem with your brake lights as well. Have a friend look at your brake lights the whole time you have the pedal depressed and make sure they stay on. If they go off then the signal to release from park is stopping also.
SOURCE: shift lever
There is a lock out solenoid that is turned on when you depress the brake pedal so you can get it out of park, it is a safety feature, if the brake light switch has a problem the issue of unable to get out of park will occur, check and make sure the brake lights work when this problem happens, if they don't then you either need a brake light switch or the wiring to the switch repaired. my 95 f150 had the same problem and it ended up being one of the fuses in the fuse panel. take a test light to your fuses. the smalest thing can generate the biggest problem.

The brake pedal has an adjustable sensor attached to the pedal arm. To adjust the sensor, you'll have to crawl under the dash. Loosen the lock nut and turn the adjustment nut, then re-tighten the lock nut. If necessary, replace the sensor.

The automatic transmission shift lock control switch
With the ignition in the ON position, voltage is supplied to automatic transmission shift lock control switch. Voltage flows through the normally closed contacts of the automatic transmission shift lock control switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is permanently grounded. This energizes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid causing the transmission shift lever to be physically locked in the PARK position. When the brake pedal is pressed the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, de-energizing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. This allows the shift lever to be move out of the PARK position.

CAUTION
Since you must work under the vehicle to adjust most shift linkages make sure you properly raise and support the vehicle before working under it. Also, wear safety glasses or goggles while working under the vehicle.
A voltmeter can be used to check the switch for voltage when the ignition key is turned to the START position with the shift lever in PARK or NEUTRAL. If there is no voltage, the switch should be adjusted or replaced.
