SOURCE: keyless remote wont work, vehicle completely shut down

Hi Russell,

Absolutely no power? No dome light? No head lights? Nothing?
When you step on the brake pedal, no brake lights?

If true, start at the source and pop the hood.

This is going to be a bit of back and forth dialogue. I'll ask some questions and you get me the answers. That way we can get to the root of the problem. To save time, I'll ask multiple questions at a time. Here goes.

  • Check the battery. Is it still there? (Valid question with no evidence of power)
  • Are the terminal clamps tight?
  • Are the terminals clean and free of corrosion?
  • Are all the belts in place and tight? (pay special attention to alternator)
  • If you have a voltmeter. test the voltage at the battery terminals. It should be +12.5VDC.
Try getting a jump, when the cables are attached does anything light up?
Does it turn over and start?
Does it do anything?

Comment me back with your findings
Mike

How do I get the key out of the ignition switch on a 2004 GMC Envoy 4.2?

Got a new vehicle Joe. Just what you need with the gas prices as high as they are!! Did you get rid of the 1998 Ford Contour?
Foot on the brake and go though the full shift range and then back to park. That should release the ignition lock. It appears to be a known issue. Check out the videos

1998 Lexus Gs300 alarm "anti theft system" arms

Hello! Lets eliminate a potential cause: There is a Technical Service Bulletin (EL-00198) that addresses key-ring interference with the Transponder Chip in the key...A touchy anti-theft system to say the least...The key-ring should not rest on or come in contact with the key grip area...Do not place any other keys on a ring with the ignition key...Actually, in order to function properly the ignition key needs to be *****...As in nothing on or near the key...I'm not saying this is your fault but it needs to be removed as a potential cause..See additional FYI information below on how to add or delete an ignition key from your vehicle's system...BELOW IS A LINK TO A SITE THAT HAS A BYPASS MODULE FOR YOUR Gs-300....Guru...Saailer

http://www.drdetailshop.com/555X.htm

FYI

The Toyota Electronic Control Module does not have programming modes without a pre-programmed key.
If there is no key available that is already programmed into the module, the module must be replaced.

To delete all but one key from the unit:

Type E 1. Simultaneously depress and release brake and accelerator pedals 1 time.
2. Insert existing master key into ignition. Do not turn the key from the OFF (LOCK) position.
3. Within 15 seconds of inserting the key, depress and release the accelerator pedal six times.
4. Within 10 seconds of completing the above step, depress and release the accelerator pedal seven times.
5. The security light will flash, indication all keys other than the one being used have been deleted.
6. Remove the key from the ignition cylinder within ten seconds. It will be the only key still programmed to work

Add Duplicate Key:

1. Simultaneously depress and release brake and accelerator pedals 1 time.
2. Insert existing master key into ignition. Do not turn the key from the OFF (LOCK) position.
3. Within 15 seconds of inserting the key, depress and release the accelerator pedal five times.
4. Within 20 seconds of completing the above step, depress and release the brake pedal six times and
remove the key.
5. Within 10 seconds, insert the new key into the ignition.
6. Within 10 seconds, depress and release the accelerator pedal one time.
7. After 80 seconds the new key is registered and the security light will go off.
8. Remove new key and depress and release the brake pedal 1 time.

Key stuck in ignition battery is dead, cant get the key out

Most vehicles you have to have power to remove the key from the ignition. It will go in and turn, but not completely turn back to the off position.

Can't remove key from ignition. battery is dead

If the battery is dead, the ignition keys will not release from the ignition. If there is no signal from the transmission shifter that it's in park since the battery is dead, then the ignition lock will not release the keys.  After charging the battery or jumping the blazer to start it and the key's still will not release, try this.
There is a "plunger" as part if the ignition. Under the steering wheel there is a small removable cap that you can take off and put a small screw driver up into and press the plunger in and it will release the key. Good luck and hope this helps, Keep me posted be glad to help.

Key won't come out of ignition - won't turn completely off

Ignition switch (where key actually goes in) needs replaced. May be easier to get the whole column because that's not gonna be very simple. Also for the problem of getting nothing when you turn the key all the way over, that is the contacts within the box of the switch down the harness on the column. Not an impossible fix though. Contacts usually get burnt and give you dead spot once in awhile, will get worse, believe me.
