Question about 1984 Chevrolet El Camino
WHEN I HAVE A FULL TANK OF GAS IN MY EL CAMINO AND I HAVE TO COME TO A FAST STOP I WILL SMELL GAS STRONG AND WHEN I LOOK AT MY GAS GAGE SOME GAS IS MISSING LIKE IT LEAKED OUT OR SOMTHING , WHAT CAN THIS BE AND WARE IS MY GAS GOING . NOTHING ON THE GROUND OR ANYTHING BUT IF I BREAK HARD AND AFTER I STOP I SMELL GAS LIKE I HAVE A CUP OF IT IN MY HAND OR SOMTHING , WHAT CAN THIS BE ?
The Gas Gauge---worn out sending unit in fuel tank
Check the fuel hose going to the pump on the
side of motor for leaks
Also check for a leaking fuel pump gasket, between
Nothing seeping under the hood,have to look around
the tank area where hoses leave the fuel,return & evap
system hard lines
Check all Emission Hoses on canister under hood & around

Yes it is all one unit, and yes that is what the problem is. don't use aftermarket parts, use OEM, (Delco Remy) they are much better quality.

it sounds like the level sensor on the sender (fuel pick up pipe in the fuel tank) is getting stuck. the level sensor is a float that is attached to the sender, and you will need to remove the fuel tank to get to it.

SOURCE: leaking fuel or strong gas smell
i had a fuel odor in my cobalt and after lowering the fuel tank i found one of the fuel lines coming out of the tank was cracked, while removing the fuel pump both of them snapped right off. way too brittle but a new pump and sending unit (all one assembily) fixed it right up with minimal difficulty and only $250.00.

you might try looking to see if the filler tube is cracked and leaking if it is you could replace it and that will take care of the check engine lite depending on what code is being set
