Hyundai terracan 2.9 crdti automatic. Was in 4wd when our bang from transmission, vehicle no longer engages 4wd but can feel the centre diff engage. No noises from transmission and runs very quietly. Any ideas ?

Probably the front hubs. Engage FWD drive very slowly get someone to walk and listen for noise from the hubs or remove and check.

Check your cv (constant velocity joint) , It may have a big clearance which is the source of the noise when turning left or right and when 4wd is engage. Juts like front wheel drive cars, if the cv joint is with clearance it will tend to sound in the left or right turns. It is not exactly clicking sound , nmore like knocking sound , low in pitch, but not heavy.

check the wires from the shifter for the transfer case they maybe discounected like mine were now mine works fine

It appears you have a Forward Clutch FAILURE. Replace the trans after you get it diagnosed and verified by a professional technician. By the way, do you have a Check Engine light? If so, what is the diagnostic code? The dealership can scan the system and find any codes which may have been stored in the TCM (Transmission Control Module). If there were any 'Incorrect Gear Ratio" codes, it's most probably the trans itself.

You might have lost your lower gears, I would have someone look at it to see if your gears are gone or if its just a faulty sensor.

Taking off in 4wd high on the beach

first make sure all rims and tyres are of equal height and profile, and if your car has a transmission brake check and or adjust to specs. see if you can move your front tailshaft ( if it has one ) at the transmission end, up and down to determine if your barings are worn, if you have front cv joints then check rear shaft for same. Often modern 4x4s have a centre power divider (or diff ) which needs regular service, or could be tight if new or damaged, and incorrect oil or baring preload to any of your diffs can cause excessive drag, make sure any diff locks are disengaging correctly,. lastly, many 4x4s are inherently less efficient freewheeling, with all wheels engaged and may be par for the course, especially smaller vehicles.

Why is there no drive to my rear wheels in my Subaru AWD?

IT is a constant all wheel drive car which means that all 4 wheels are driven all of the time . There is a differential in the centre that allows for different speeds between front and back while driving such as going over bumps . When you engage the 4wd button you are in effect locking that centre diff so that both front and rear axles drive together. If you have it so that 4wd is not engaged (selected ) and there is no drive action to the rear wheels that then indicates that the shaft in that centre diff is not connected in the side gears ( stripped /broken) and it has been in 4wd all the time so that it could be sold

Part time or Full time, it varies by unsaid COUNTRY !!

do not run Part time on dry pavement only ice or offroad.
or it will not shift or if does , it will wind up.

with or with out center differential.????
if with center and on dry road, the switch is bad or the linkage is failing
if no center diff, stop driving in part time 4wd on dry roads.

4 Wheel Grinds on Engage

make sure that your vehicle has a "on the go" 4wd operation
if not , you will have to all but stopped to get around the gear slashing
if you have "on the go " engagement , then is a problem in the synchro rings of the transfer case
take it to an accredited transmission specialist for a proper diagnosis

I don't think you will know whats going on until someone takes the transfer case apart. It could be the shifter stuck in mid position and it is not completely in either position.

Hyundai terracan won't go in 4x4 the light says its engaged but when u drive u can feel it isn't

I have a 2004 Hyundai Terracan which caused me much pain and angst when it did not engage the 4 wheel drive, just mega stuck several times and had to be towed out. The gears would not engage unless the car was moved many metres forward which is usless when you are mega stuck. PROBLEM SOLVED by packing the actuator with lithium grease and then putting ties around the rubber boot that surrounds the actuator AND then putting in a bigger tube from the solenoid down to the actuator and removing the factory installed one. This then increased the pressure to drive the actuator and the gears now engage if the car is moved less than an inch. Its now mega reliable and works every time. I have tested it many times now to the extreme and it never fails.

Rear. In Europe was on sales until 2003 (last line made) by OPEL as frontera. Equipped mostly with 2.2 Turbo diesel engines, rear wheeler, ability to engage 4WD, under motion up to 60MPH, having automatic front diff locks, and despite the bad critics about crash tests and behaviour, well sold. Still on the roads.

Auto transmission fault on toyota landcruiser amazon

Howdy, My name is Mark, I am a mechanic (Auto trans and Diff specialist 23 years) this symptom is common with a broken driveline component, with full time 4WD and centre diff all the drive goes to the wheel with least resistance, (or to broken component) therefore when you engage difflock (Center) the drive then goes 2 ways front and rear so vehicle will drive, could be as simple as stripped spline in front wheel hub, broken CV joint etc. 1 major weakness these vehicles have is if driven with center diff lock engaged on high traction surfaces they do break the front diff, this will give the same symptom but you would of been aware of it when it happened.
To check where the drive is going chock all 4 wheels, park brake on, bonnet up, start engine let it idle down (after cold start), engage reverse (high range open center) from the front of vehicle and off to one side you can see the front axles, if one of them is turning that is where your drive is going, have someone to help you and under no circumstances place your self under or in driving path of vehicle.

Place vehicle in 4wd (high or low). This will hold the front drive shaft still for the rest of the test. Jack up the front end of the vehicle. Remove the actuator. Have a buddy spin the right front wheel while you use a long punch or screwdriver to try to manually engage the diff. The left front wheel should spin in the other direction if the diff is good. Also before you check the diff you need to grab the front driveshaft and make sure it is locked, If it spins freely when the truck is in park and in 4wd with the front end raised then problem is in transfer case. If you can't make the diff engage manually with punch then the problem is in the diff. If front diff engages manually then the problem is the actuator. Hope this helps..
