Oil Pan Gasket Replacement / Oil Pan Removal

I need to replace the Oil Pan Gasket on a 1998 Oldsmobile Silhouette. I took a look under the van and it looked like I just need to remove the starter and then I should be able to get the oil pan off? Although...I have read on some forums online that the oil pan gasket requires the motor to be raised? So this job is really easy or much harder then I thought. Does the old pan removal require this motor to be raised? Thank you!

Hi. This issue has several causes, but the oil light indicator is a strong sign of low pressure in the engine. This will cause the engine lubrication rate to drop, thus, producing a illuminated oil light, and erratic Oil pressure readings. The necessary actions are to have a manual oil pressure test ran on this engine, asap. When running a manual oil pressure test, you will discover if the true oil pressure is low, or normal. If the test proves that the oil pressure is, indeed, low, this will confirm that the Oil pump is suspect.

Now, if the true readings given during the manual oil pressure test are indicating that the pressure is normal, this will be the result of a failed sending unit(oil pressure switch).

Replacing oil pan gasket 1998 chevy silverado 305 cu.in.
REMOVAL PROCEDURE
  1. Remove the oil level indicator tube.
  2. Raise the vehicle.
  3. Remove the engine oil and the engine oil filter.
  4. Remove the oil filter adapter.
  5. Remove the starter.
  6. Remove the flywheel inspection cover.
  7. Remove the engine mount through bolts.
  8. Raise and support the engine.




  1. Remove the oil pan nuts and bolts. Note the location of any studs to assist reassembly.
  2. Remove the engine oil pan and the gasket.
  3. Clean all sealing surfaces. Refer to Oil Pan Clean and Inspect under Engine Unit Repair.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE


  1. Install the engine oil pan and a NEW gasket. Refer to Oil Pan Installation under Engine Unit Repair.
  2. Lower the engine onto the mounts.
  3. Install the engine mount through-bolts.
  4. Install the starter.
  5. Install the flywheel inspection cover.
  6. Install the engine oil filter and the engine oil.
  7. Install the oil filter adapter.
  8. Install the oil level indicator tube.

Oil Pan Gasket Replacement/ Oil Pan removal
yes the starter does have to be removed but also the engine mounts must be also as the engine must be raised about 10 " to get the pan out. if you do try this make sure you have very very sturdy jack stands for the engine to just a jack as the jack will lift it but wont maintain it long enough to safely remove the pan and reinstall it......good luck and be very carefull

Oil pan gasket and front crank seal replacement on 2000 dodge 2500 van 5.2l
Drain coolant,pull radiator,fan shroud off.Need a fan tool to get that off.Need to pull ac,alt,ps and brackets off. to expose front of engine. Need crank pulley puller. Once that's done the timing cover can be removed. Hint,spring for a new timing set. loosen engine mounts and lift engine at bell-housing remove oil pan bolts.and reverse.Might as well replace oil pump if you intend to keep the van.

Motor mounts binding. How to replace them.
jack up the van place jack under oil pan with wood block between oil pan and jack pull the 2 nuts and 3 bolts, jack up motor pull out mount and reverse steps to install

Rusted out oil pan
Loosening motor mounts and jacking up engine may give you some room, but might not be enough. Supporting the frame and lowering the front axle assembly is another option, but you will need a helping hand. Replacement is tricky in keeping the gasket in place. Make studs out of bolts that are the same size as factory by cutting the heads off. They will help hold the gasket in place as well as guide the pan into proper position. Cut screwdriver slots in them for easier removal after you get the mounting bolts started.

drain oil and filter remove.
Drop oil pan under engine.
Un bolt oil pump and re install new pump fill new oil and filter and gasket , cap , start engine test for leaks shut down re check oil level.

you'll need to remove your door panel (screws are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door) and remove the cover adjacent to your mirror to remove the bolts to remove the mirror.

Oil pan gasket replacement
It shouldn't be hard on that car as the oil pan is exposed. Unplug the oil plug and drain the oil. Then unbolt the oil pan, clean off the old gasket and replace. Make sure you scrape both the pan and the block clean thoroughly and then bolt back up. Don't forgot to replug the drain plug.
