I have an 04 Ford Explorer. AWD. It has push button activation. The 4X4 High light on dash is coming on and flashing 5 or 6 times then going out. I have some grinding type noise whenever I turn front wheels sharply. Ive replace upper ball joints on both sides. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Have the cv joints professionally checked if the noise happens while moving

hello,yes you do have to take the hub off to replace the ball joint with the ball joint being on the back side of the hub. hope this helps and please rate this.

I had same problem on my 2002 explorer. Its either the computer module, or the electric solenoid on the transfer case. In my case it was both. The computer module I had done twice in 14 months.

SOURCE: got 93 ford explorer have 4x4 push button type 4

There is a Shift motor that shifts it in 4wheel drive and also a shift mudule I believe on this year. Either one of these can be bad.

my wheel bearing was making noises like that on pass side it would only do it on turns or curves but started doing it whenever i drove i would check that an bottom ball joints

This job is essentially man against beast with hammer style of job. You will need an alignment after you are finished, seriously easier and safer to let a shop do this.

If you do it yourself be advised of the HUGE potential energy stored in the spring, and do not allow it to release....

I just bought an 06 eddie bauer explorer with 43,000 miles. the 4x4 lights in instrument panel do not come on at start up and do not light up when 4X4 buttons are pushed. The 4X4 low button has a light...
It depends on whether or not the drive train is actually going in to 4x4 mode. If the 4x4 is working properly, I would think it is just burned out light bulbs and not an issue with the operation of the system.
