1992 nissan stanza- the model is actually pre diagnostic codes means I am told is can't be hooked up to a diagnostic machine. But I recently found the connector behind the radio and hooked up to a machine that gave the air flow sensor code. It idles fine in Park and revs up in Park, no check light is on, but in gear I can out walk the car with the pedal to the floor. It has very little acceleration. Previous symptoms the car would not accelerate or hesitate while drive, not start then after several trys start.

Import cars built prior to OBDII scanners are tough to diagnose. There should be a throttle position sensor that could be faulty, or you could have low fuel pressure. It takes alot of guessing or trial and error without a scanner and flow charts.

Oh boy, you are in for a learning curve. I spent the better part of a year getting to know the Nissan system of computer controls, diagnostic procedures, everything about Sentras from the mid eighties to the mid nineties. Your Stanza is very similar, fortunate for you to have a '92 with somewhat more sophisticated controls than my primitive '87 model. I even had to deal with a computer controlled carburetor-more headaches than I care to recall.
First, Jack, you have to find the computer, which is the diagnostic unit and the little LED light or lights on it are the blinkers that blink out the trouble codes. The computer on mine is under the passenger front seat. If not there, it will be behind the glove box or in the center console. So you locate it and set it in mode 4- for code read outs. That is the diagnostic mode. There are 5 modes, you can read the short paragraph about it in the link I will give. It's really easy, there are only 16 codes in all. Here is the link with all details and short description of codes. http://www.2carpros.com/articles/nissan-obd1-diagnostic-trouble-codes-and-retrieval-procedure-1984-to-1994
you were told wrong... all vehicles 1981- 1986 have check lights early system however all later 1986 thru today have a Diagnostic connect port... all connection plugs are on driver side floor above or next to e-brake bolted to bottom dash
Relieve fuel pressure (See procedure below). Remove air duct. Remove accelerator cable bracket. Remove vacuum hose from regulator. Remove fuel return hose from regulator. Remove screws and regulator. Reverse procedure to install.
RELIEVE FUEL PRESSURE Disconnect fuel pump relay (See Diagram). Start engine and hold at 1600 RPM until engine stall. Turn ignition switch off. Allow engine to cool completely before performing any fuel system repairs.
If it has fuel injection it cannot be adjusted.
If it has carburetor then one can turn a screw on the carburetor, but I think that your 1992 Nissan has fuel injection (electronically controlled idle).
Nissan recommends only NGK ZFR5E-11 spark plugs for your 1991 Stanza and they already come pre-gapped in the box. They might cost a little more than bargain brand spark plugs, but your stanza will definitely run much better with OEM plugs.
I have the 87 model, but the procedure should be the same. Its under the passengers seat. Had to remove my seat to access it.Turn the ignition on,with a flat-headed screwdriver turn the screw fully clockwise, and wait until you see several blinks. Two or three. Now turn the screw fully counter-clockwise,and read the blinks. The Red light denotes "!0), the yellow light denotes (1), so if the Red light blinks once, and the green light blinks twice, the code will be 12
There are a number of screws and clips holding that particular door panel onto the door. Recommend you get a service manual with a detailed diagram showing how to disassemble that panel, else you might destroy most of the clips trying to remove the panel.
