My 1998 honda prelude has no signal to icm

My 98 prelude has no spark, i checked everything, even continuity to all involved wires, i broke it down to no signal out of e.c.m. (#c20, yellow with green stripe i believe) actually i lied, with my l.e.d. test lamp it shows about 5 (flashes) signals of ground while starting to turn over engine and then just fades away, once in a while it actually sounds like it might be trying to fire

Test or check the crank position sensor. Look for the 5 volt reference signal (your prelude may have a higher reference voltage- I don't know), check that the ground wire is good, then see if you get a signal from the signal wire. See if you can back probe the signal wire with the engine cranking. If the sensor is at fault, the ecu cannot determine spark timing.

Look at a wiring diagram to see if the camshaft position sensor is also part of spark timing.

Testimonial: "i am sorry i couldnt answer ,gone away for the last 2 weeks, i really appreciate your input, my 98 prelude has 2 sensors on the crank (both going into e.c.m. i test both for opens and shorts, (they both are good) i also check for voltage while turning over the engine and they produce about 2 volts (each) to the e.c.m. (cant remember if it is ac or dc volts) do you know if that is right? anyways the e.c.u. sends a signal from there to the icm in the distributor and the weird thing is that it flashes my led test light for about the first five revolutions of the motor and then the flashes (signals) fades away, i am heading towards a faulty e.c.m. the only problem with that is if i switch the e.c.m. i believe the car needs to be towed to honda land to get more work done to match the computer and keys and whatever, that could add $600 and still not solve the problem, please give me some help if you know more about it than i do, i also have to tell you that the red key was used once after everything else failed, thank you for all your help till now. bob"

I don't know any more about it, sorry. Probably the ecm would need programming. Have you checked a repair manual for the crank sensor testing? It is dc current, direct current, by the way, all automotive circuits run on dc..

thanks montehammons for the heads up info. well i think i checked the sensor testing proceedure but its been a couple months and i did about every test possible, the one thing that baffles me about what you said this time is and last was about the 5 volt signal at the crank posistion sensor, i was thinking that the sesor actually produces the voltage by the crank triggers passing by and producing magnetism, (just like a abs sensor does)? the faster it passes by the more voltlage it creates

  • montehammons Aug 16, 2014

A few sensors-camshaft pos., crank position, MAP sensor, maybe others, have a reference voltage signal. A lot of them use a 5 volt reference signal. As I understand it, and I'm sure there are many different ways a sensor may work, the electromagnetic effect from the passing magnet (talking about a crank sensor here) changes the volt signal-and this is the information sent to the computer. I believe it's called a hall effect sensor...a little research by you may tell you more than I know about it. its a little gray area for me. self learning only goes so far unless you intensely pursue it. at 70 years old, i don't learn as fast as i did when i was 35. lol-life slows down. Hope you figure it out, robert good luck.

SOURCE: 1996 honda accord no turn signal

Check the wiring in the front and back to lights for shorts to ground, if nothing is found replace the turn signal switch, be careful to disarm the airbag before doing any work on the column as the steering wheel must be pulled to replace the turn switch.

SOURCE: engine turns over fine , car will not start.

well the first part of your question i was all ready to tell you to put a new fuel pump in, now not so sure, there is a relay for fuel pump, can you hear pump cycle and relay click? relay under hood you will have to listen close they don't run long maybe a couple secounds, if you don't relay bad. if you do pump could be bad, do fuel pressure test pump could be weak. don't think sunroof and turn signals are related, but stranger things have happend.

SOURCE: HARD STARTING

Hello and thank your for choosing fixya.com. As far as your car being hard to start in the morning, you may have a dying batter.Look on the battery for a date (which indicates the date of purchase) There should be a whole on the month, and day of purchase. If there isn't any, have the batter tested. You may need to replace it. Also, make sure that the battery terminals are clean and tight. Make sure that the wires on the starter are secure and as clean as possible as well. Check for frayed or damaged wiring. For the exhaust, it sound like you need to replace the donut in the manifold (exhaust). It's fairly simple to really so long as you can get to it. Disconnect the exhaught pipe from the manifold (should be 2-4) bolts (usually 3) and take out the old donut (if any of it's left) making sure there are nothing left of in the exhuast pipe. Put the new donut in, and bolt the pipe back to the manifold (see repair manual or parts dealer for torque specifications).
I hope this information deem useful in the repair of your Honda. I thank you for choosing fixya.com. Please let me know if you have any other questions or comments, or need further assistance.

Hello Tom,I had the plugs, wires and coil replaced, but no improvements. Can it be a sensor, or the cam nsor? Im going nuts, and broke.

We all know that feeling, especially the broke part. Stop throwing parts at it. You need a good diagnosis. For "cranks, no start" check fuel pressure and spark. For no spark, use a wiring diagram and understand what is involved. The crank and cam sensors are usually part of the mix. The computer (pcm) uses these sensors to determine spark timing, and often injector timing. Also besides coil, plugs, and wires, and the sensors mentioned, don't forget how the ignition system controls the coils- the ignition control module, or ICM. This little part is often the cause of no spark. But, everything can and should be tested first.

98 prelude starting issues

This is a very common problem on Honda vehicles. The security system is known to fail. Basically when you insert your key, the system checks for certain signal. If the system cannot get the correct signal from the key, it assumes the key is incorrect and goes into SECURITY lockout mode. (prevents hotwiring) This has been happening for a long time. There are ways to bypass this now. Read through this page for info, solutions as well.

No spark on the 98 honda civic ex coupe coil is good and icm is good what else could it be?

If the coil is good and giving out spark and your ICM is good the cap can have a missing button which will not allow spark to go to the spark plugs through the plug wires do replace the distributor cap and rotor and spark plug wires

How do you replace a fuel gauge in a 98 Honda prelude?

fuel gauge is part of the gauge cluster most likely the problem is in the sending unit in the gas tank or wiring between that and the gauge

My 98 prelude wont sttay on.. i replaced the alternator, batterym spark plugs and wires.... everytyme i get a jump it comes on and as soon as i take em off the car shuts off

Well, you seem to have replaced parts that I would have changed in the course of trying to solve a starting/charging problem.
And a tune up problem.

I would recheck the connections at the battery and clean with a wire brush if necessary.

However, the alternator, if working correctly, should keep the car running after you start it with the jumper cables. There's something wrong there, I think.

check your wiring for dirty connections or broken wires, you may have wires that are rubbed through or connectors that are not making full contact. you will need an ohm meter and check wires for continuity. a wiring diagram will be needed.
